If Denis is going to come through and win this, he's going to need to finish a few points at the net. Anderson has no chance tracking any slightly above average drop or volley. Keep him guessing Shapo!

Denis's level dropped a bit from the first set, and that's all it takes for the balance of play to change. You have to keep this guy on his heels.

Both guys are serving well, this 3rd set looks destined for a tie-breaker.

From Anderson's side it does. With Denis you can never tell. He can be humming along fine, and then lose rhythm for a minute and double fault himself into a bad spot and suddenly he's down a break. Hasn't happened in this match yet but could happen anytime, really. That's why he needs to put more pressure on Anderson. This isn't looking terribly promising.

Anderson served his way out of trouble there but that's how Denis needs to play on Anderson's serve. Had him on the run there for a bit.

At least Shapo is getting more returns in play now. Just gotta keep plugging away here.

I'm not surprised he's frustrated, he'll play a great return point and then the next serve will just be unreturnable. Hopefully he'll get a chance somewhere but Anderson's been quite solid overall.

That Shapo one-handed backhand down the line was a beauty.

He's hit a number of beautiful winners (including in that love hold) but it just feels like boxing a glacier right now. He's definitely upped his level since the last set but Anderson's been able to fairly calmly hold. That said, if he goes out swinging like this, it's still a bit of a moral victory.

I was having nightmare flashbacks to the Wimbledon tie breaker against Djoker but this time Nadal wins it and takes the 3rd set.
Nadal wins on a 39 shot set point, what a match!

Holy Toledo, what a return to even get that serve back and he forces an Anderson miss. Going the distance.

See, I know people are going to be pumped watching that last return, but it's games like that that show the difference between Denis really seeing some success and a top 15 ranking and where he's at. 0-30, second serve sits up, and he pushes it long for no reason. Then he wins a crazy point to get up 15-40, but he should have three break points, not two. Then he does exactly the same thing at 15-40. I know, he got the set, but that shouldn't have even been as dramatic as it was.
Those returns have to go in the court. They don't have to be winners or anything close to it. They have to go in. Anderson has previously served his way out of trouble, but not that time. Anderson gave him a gift and he almost pissed it away.
