Gaudreau deserves a lot of credit for his durability, but consistency is really important, too.

Kane and Panarin have more EVP (Marner has 1 less than Johnny).

A lot of way to slice and dice this list depending on what you prioritize (add Mark Stone if healthy).

And which of these guys signed in small Canadian markets as UFAs again

9.5M in Tampa or Vegas is like 12M in Calgary

Hopefully the Flames are giving Gaudreau more respect than the fans in this thread or there’s a 0% chance he’s re-signing.

I specified “to win one game” in my previous post, which for me equates to ‘best’ and ignores contracts, age, etc

Johnny had a spectacular season. 18-19 was pretty great, too, but we all know what happened in between - excuse it however you want but it was not elite play. Maybe fanbases of some of the other players I listed have similar gripes - but I’d argue that all of them have either delivered more in the playoffs or play more complete games that help their teams more during offensive dry spells that are inevitable for any player.

I need more than a great season every few years to really move up my list. I also need to see an older guy like Kopitar prove that he does not have it anymore to move him down. He lead his team (lacking their #1D) in ice time while taking the Losers to 7 games. Johnny’s team is way better, but they were done in 5. That’s just one piece of the puzzle, but if you swap Johnny and Anze I wonder how each series plays out.

Would anybody be shocked if Johnny puts up just 70pts next year? I wouldn’t be, and IMO that’s a big indictment for a guy who is primarily offensive.

That wasn’t the question. I’ve simply given a list of 20-25 guys who IMO are better overall hockey players. That’s not an insult to Johnny or statement that he shouldn’t be signed.

Where would you guys have ranked Taylor Hall after his Hart season?

Kopitar is better than Gaudreau right now?? Some of them you can make a case but you are obviously going out of your way to be obtuse.

Taylor Hall? Gaudreau has had two seasons better than his Hart season and counting...Gaudreau will probably finish with 200+ more points than Hall.

Gaudreau is over a PPG FOR HIS CAREER, don't give me this couple seasons nonsense.

9.5x8 is a hometown discount if there is one. That is what other elite players have signed in markets like Tampa and Vegas but I don’t see that happening here. Would be something else if Johnny did that though
