Does anyone know what restaurant (presumably?) is going in on 23rd Ave and 4th St NW? It used to be The Block then was closed for a while then Stavros moved in and rebranded, but also closed. Seems like a poor location for a restaurant but maybe something established will try it out?

Its weird that no one has ever had any kind of long term success. Its a great location in an established high class neighborhood with not a ton of competition around it. I saw them doing renos looked like they were building a big floor to ceiling fireplace. Presumably another restaurant, I think they need to do something a little more high end as opposed to the sports pubs theyve tried before.
Also not sure if this was mentioned but Sharkclub Deerfoot Meadows closed last friday, rebranding to a tap house. Kinda sad, was one of the better places to catch a game. I know one of the GMs who told me pubs are basically a dying breed the younger generation doesnt go out to watch games anymore. Its still the same Northland Property management that own Moxies and Sharkclub but a complete rebrand, they will play flames games with no sound but thats it.

The Block was higher end. Covid didn't do the Stavros move any favours, given the timing.

Is Vecova the old VRRI centre?
We used to have Engineering league floor hockey. Imagine some random guy who played in the WHL and then a bunch of us nerds getting in fights over Engineering league floor hockey. We'd steal all the empty's from that bomb shelter engineering building and take them over to that bottle depot for a few flats of beer.

I'm only guessing here, but perhaps the high school is a charter school and/or in a non-traditional school building that doesn't have a gym of its own. Maybe the students head there for gym class.

4th Spot is the competition, and it is heady.

I believe that the Christine Meikle school utilizes Vecova. The school was built in Varsity because the children that go there need to utilize and be close to facilities such as Vecova and the Children's hospital.

Oh my son attends Stem Academy and they are housed in the old Smart building. There is no gym so they have to goto Vecova and the U of C for Phys Ed.

Huh, I didn't know SMART vacated that space.

A new public charter school hub will drive innovation in Alberta's school system, support creativity, lead research initiatives and partner with post-secondary institutions.
This new hub will open in the 2023-24 school year in a Calgary building recently purchased by the Alberta government.
The SMART Technologies building at the University of Calgary Research Park will initially accommodate up to 1,200 students from three public charter schools. Within five years, the facility is expected to house about 2,000 students from four or more public charter schools. The new hub will provide charters with the opportunity to work collaboratively to deliver unique and innovative educational programming in the state-of-the-art facility.

To be exact, they are taking over the kitchen in Pin Bar on the corner of 17th and 4th.

Haven't had them yet, but they have some buzz on social media, looking forward to trying them out! Might give Class Clown some competition!

Bastion is good and worth a try. My only slight gripe is the product is too moist and soft. You feel like you can roll it up into a softball and throw it soft.
I actually never would have thought of that as a minus, but yes a burger can be on the too moist side.
That said, the fries and burger are very good overall

As mentioned the Shark Club in Deerfoot Meadows has closed. It will reopen as The Tavern Collective https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/the-shark...-bar-1.7059679 blends the best of the classic pub with the nostalgic thrill of blast-from-the-past music and entertainment, all wrapped in an elevated, unique aesthetic."
Officials say the new public house, which has a Frenchie named JD as its mascot, will have steampunk-inspired interior décor and a menu that mixes traditional pub food with healthy, modern dishes.
Personally I find the location questionable in a commercial area that is unwalkable from any residential neighborhood, but am willing to try it once.
Where are the best pubs in the city these days? Which pubs (or even sports bars) are the best for watching a Flames game on TV?
