I was out in Vancouver the other day and heard her on the (City News) radio. I figured she must've been shuffled out there. Then I heard 660's weather girl too and realized they must have x amount of people covering multiple locales for the network. Cost cutting extraordinaire Rogers. Makes sense though, obviously.

It's one of the bad trends in radio. One of the ONLY advantages that terrestrial radio can offer is local coverage including of traffic, sports, news and weather.
And they are giving up that ground, which is really the only thing they have left.

Klein would have been perfect for that 1-4 slot show as he had the most sports knowledge on the station other than Hockey, Football and Jays. Klein probably had the best football knowledge as well now that i think about it

I really liked Klein. He also had the right balance of humility/self-depreciating humor and actual knowledge/perspectives. Was a great guy to listen to and also seemed like a great person to grab some wings and a beer with.
I also really liked his general appreciation for having the role after being rescued and getting a bigger role in sports talk from whatever he was doing before (660?).
Like Pat...I have a lot of time for people that are thankful for their role and committed to just growing as individuals...even if they don't have the a truly defining differentiator.

This is bang on, and why I change the channel when I hear Nault on the radio.
Pat realizes that his best opportunity to learn about hockey and get better at his job is to always start from a position of friendly humility where he comes across knowing less than he actually does. People are more likely to help, engage, and teach you things with this approach or style.
Nault is the opposite of this and a blowhard know it all.
He also doesn’t need help because captain negative already knows everything.
Anyone can point out mistakes and deficiencies on the Flames, so if I need lazy negative thinking it’s an easy take that I can deduct myself.
Or as the cliche goes, “any fool can knock down a barn, but only a skilled carpenter can build one.”

Listening to the Fan960 this morning. I had no idea Cabbie lives in Calgary now. There are other well known sports media personalities like Natasha Staniszewski ex of TSN that have relocated to Calgary as well. How does Fan960 not develop a daily/weekly local sports show with the talent that lives in Calgary? Yes, I know the money probably isn't there but it does seem like a missed opportunity. Instead we get scrubs to listen to.

How much is it to buy a local AM radio station in Calgary for example? The revs and profits will hardly move the needle for a Rogers, etc. But wondering if fired employees banned together, got some capital and bought a station. Didn't someone do this in Vancouver or Victoria recently?

You don’t need to buy a station, just need to broadcast it. Americans do it all the time, you just need enough power to reach out to a large enough area. As long as you aren’t playing music, it shouldn’t be a problem. Buy an antenna and choose a spot. Have the rest of the team broadcast to your network or live stream.

No idea but it's more the fact that you won't turn a profit. You'll lose money and continue to have to pump cash in.

I have to say I just love the new format. I'm a podcast only listener, and it feels like a lot of energy has been directed towards that, and I sure appreciate it.
Boomer in the morning with Pinder, and Warrener and Reilly continues to be as good as it ever was with a nice mix of sports talk and fast food talk, but now it comes in 1hr segments posted way sooner you can grab on the way to work.
Then they added Flames Talk which you can just shoot directly into my veins. Hours of coverage in massive detail with specific hockey guests. LOVE IT. I've always been more of a "single sport" dude, and specifically Flames obsessed, so it's great to see the market finally getting served with that level of detail.
It's been super rough at 960 over the pandemic with the layoffs, remote etc... but they're killing it for me as a listener now. If the station goes under I'd pay a monthly fee to listen to exactly this format.
Take my money! Well done.

I'm liking Pat's postgame shows in podcast form. Get to avoid the commercial breaks, it's not overly long and it's still got plenty of info and in-depth talk regarding the game that just finished.

Some guys in our tiny town did it a few years ago, and got in trouble - no big fines or anything, but they were immediately shut down.

It's not about rights. It's about broadcasting licences.

No it’s not.
Getting a radio license isn’t hard. If you plan on using music that has copyright restrictions, yes.
Terrestrial radio has its limits anyway, use internet radio.
I’m not talking about pirate radio.

You can still do live radio, but it’s best If you go through someone like radio.co and have it go to TuneIn radio.
I’ve been doing it for 10 years. Radio sweeps, jingles and all. I want to get started on something more local to just Calgary and maybe the foothills.
