Band of Brothers style series where they follow a smallish non-hero fleet from the initial invasion, huge losses in other ships and personnel, fall of Betazed, then push back to Cardassia Prime
But yes, please fire the Discovery writing staff into the sun before trying this.

Or how about having it from a non star fleet perspective? Worf at one point was going to head out to the border to fight with a non aligned group. How about a story of these people fighting in rickity mismatched ships with ancient earth machine guns fighting a dirty war against the Dominion and Cardassian's after the Federation decides it can't fight for these out of the way worlds.

That could be so cool! But first..."Discovery Writing Staff...Why no! We dont happen to have any current openings...those other potential shows? Uh....they're still on the drawing board...don't call us, we'll call you!"

Could you imagine a Band of Brothers/Andor style show of Star Trek? That would be so cool.

Star trek isn't that though. Ds9 is as grimdark as star trek can be imo, it is the edge. The concept is still utopia at the end of the day. How can humans get to utopia and preserve it.
It would be impossible to tell the story of utopia in the trenches of the dominion war.

Sounds like you want Star Trek: Maquis Guess it'd be nice to see them get crushed by Changling infiltrators and the Dominion

Might be an interesting story line for Thomas Riker. Episode 9 of this season of Lower Decks made it canon that he survived Cardassian imprisonment and the Dominion war.
Seems like something the character would do.

Maybe, You could really add some dirty elements to it as well. What if Section 31 starts getting involved? Starts supplying them with weapons both normal and dirty. Then when things get out of hands decides to shut them down.
You could even bring back William Sadler for it,

I like Star Trek best as a show about exploration.
Ron Moore got his space war series after DS9. It was Battlestar Galactica. It was fantastic of course, but with Star Trek it’s the optimistic view of the future that resonates.

I don't want a grimdark view of Star Trek. I also don't consider something like Band of Brothers to be grim dark in almost any way. I think you can tell stories from the front of the Dominion war and still deliver the hope that Star Trek is meant to give.
I also do agree that at it's best, Star Trek is usually about exploration and learning which is what made DS9 so good. It delivered that while also giving us something that we had never been given before.

Yes, but...can you dress him up as Death and make him play games with people?

I agree. I'm not opposed to a 'Grim dark' Star Trek...to a point. I think that grimness and grittiness that DS9 gave us was very refreshing.
I think there is room for that because it gives Starfleet more nuance and less 'black and white' morality...but not too dark.
I mean, you can throw a morally ambiguous Admiral or two in there and figure something out to make it work.

You might be a Klingon or a little holodeck sweeper, but sooner or later you dance with Deputy Director Sloan.

There should be grimdark parts of the galaxy but the core of starfleet and the future of humanity should be bright and hopeful.
Tired of all these conspiracy stories with secret Section 31s, Robocop building a secret ship, Borg people replacements, etc.
Voyager could have been very grimdark as they were isolated in another quadrant but they should have maintained their optimistic and human outlook as a way to survive (opposite to the Oddysey). Kind of like a positive BSG. "Oh, Ensign Kim died last week. Too bad. We must carry on! Coffeeeee!".

Is this much different than they did treat Harry Kim or Voyager? IMO this is exactly what voyager was but being shot in the late 90s / 00s gave it less umph than if it were shot today. Early on they replace HK with a version of HK from an alternate timeline slightly ahead of theirs, and the response is exactly that "carry on! Where's my coffee!?"

Kim was an ensign for at least seven years. That's grimdark.

Not only that but an ensign on a ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant that had crew members die left right and center.
Janeway -"We lost 6 officers this week, we need to fill those holes"
Chakotay - "How about Kim?"
Janeway - "I'd rather add code to the emergency medical hologram"
Kim walks in "Un Captain about the promotion"
Janeway - "Dude that refresher isn't scrubbing itself"
