Every single time Flame's rumours come up this exact sentence in this exact format is in there.

EDIT : well, I guessed the stats didn't suggest that, he wouldn't have been put on waivers

he's a fairly physical energy player. you won't get much in terms of stats from him.

Frank Seravalli speculating that the Flames would make a good trade partner for Varlamov:
http://www.tsn.ca/mondaymustread-fru...burgh-1.394537
Quote:
Matt Duchene’s name in trade rumours stole much of the buzz in Colorado last week, but keep an eye on Semyon Varlamov. The Avalanche are believed to be fielding offers on him. Reto Berra is expected to make his fifth straight start on Tuesday in Toronto. Berra, 28, leads the NHL in save percentage (.953) and goals-against average (1.50) with a minimum of seven starts. He also has a tremendous nickname: "Berra-cade." Colorado is high on Calvin Pickard, 23, who had a .932 save percentage in 16 NHL games last year. Varlamov, 27, has three years remaining at $5.9 million AAV. Varlamov has struggled this season, but he's also been hampered by a groin injury. He is on injured reserve until at least Tuesday, which also gives Colorado roster flexibility while Gabriel Landeskog is suspended.
Are this year’s Flames in the same boat as last year’s Wild? They need a Devan Dubnyk. Calgary has a league-worst .884 save percentage. They’ve given up at least 10 more goals than any team in the NHL not named Blue Jackets. Columbus is now 6-5-0 under John Tortorella after their 0-7-0 start. That probably has more to do with Sergei Bobrovsky’s recently reappeared confidence than anything else. Bobrovsky has accounted for all six wins with a 6-3-0 mark and .923 save percentage since his horrific start. Just spitballing, but Varlamov makes perfect sense in Calgary when healthy - maybe even in a dollar-for-dollar deal since the Avalanche are hankering for a top-four defencemen

Wideman for Varly straight up could make a lot of sense.

I don't think Varly is the answer here and I don't think giving up assets for a "quick fix" would really benefit the Flames this year. He also makes 5.9 for the next 3 years...

Would gladly do Wideman for Valomov but would surprised if the Avs did or if Wideman would waive. Flames probably send Hiller+a Dman like Russell or if we are lucky Smid/Engellend

2015/2016 Trade Speculation and Rumors
Wideman isn't part of the core or the future so he's not an asset in that sense. He's also making around $5M. I think the real issue may be getting him to waive his NTC. Getting some consistency in net would settle the team down and 3 years of Varlamov would keep the team competitive while waiting for either Gillies or McDonald to become an NHL goalie. It makes a lot of sense.
The goalie market is a buyers market, wouldn't be surprised if Wideman was the best the Avs could get for Varlamov.

That's a lot of money for a guy that has been up and down for the most part of his career, although his last two years in Colorado have been pretty good.
If we could move Wideman for him 1 for 1 I would do it. Not sure why the Avs would though.

They are looking for a top 4 defenseman which is rarely available via trade. Yes we know Wideman's warts but he put up 50 points last year and is a legit second pairing guy on a team who has Nick Holden in their top 4.

Wideman signed with the Flames so he could play with his buddy Iginla. He might just welcome a move to Colorado if it made him happier.

I would trade Wideman for that contract but given the three years left on that deal I would expect a 2nd round pick from the Avs in addition or no deal.

I don't get it, people are worried about having cap space to sign Monahan, Johnny and Bennett in the future so they want to have a bigger contract on the books for longer? It's not like Varlamov is an amazing goalie either...I wouldn't trade for him just because of that contract.

Ramo and Hiller make over $7 million combined. They are off the books next season so it's a wash. That said I would rather trade for a guy like Bernier than take on a big deal.

Maybe the people who are willing to take on Varlamov aren't the same people worried about signing Monahan and Gaudreau.
I know I don't think there will be much trouble signing those guys at all with all the expiring contracts this year and next. Plus we are likely going to have to spend some money on goaltending unless we want to continually hope that we can catch lightning in a bottle with someone.
I certainly have questions about Varlamov but he has had two seasons in a row with a .927 and .921 save percentage in front of pretty average at best defensive groups in Colorado.
