But only -1 to go from nothing to a blue square?
Or does it only take +1 to go from nothing to a red square?

Yes, -1 is the threshold for blue, 0 for grey, and +1 for red. Also due to a little bug not all skill givers have the same weight when it comes to skill, so I may give you a positive that brings you up to +5, then another guy can give you a negative that drops you down 6 to -1.
We weren't worried about that because we figured over time there'd be enough skill going around that most people would not be near the zero mark for long.

I don't know, seems a bit jaded to me.
How many skill points, positive or negative are given out throughout the course of a day?
Its kinda unfair if someone suddenly goes down to -5 based on one bad post, because of the 'bug'....but then he suddenly needs 6 good posts to get back to +1.
Or can you decide how many skill points you want to give?

Is that more positives to more people, or just more positives overall?
Nevermind, I counted.
236 people with red.
235 people with blue.
So its about even.
But there are more people with 3 blue squares, then there are people with 3 red squares.
If I looked at it right.

I think you missed what I was trying to say.
If I give a neg to a new user, and he goes down to -5..... Then another skill giver comes along and gives him a positive; it's possible that skill give's weight might be 6; which would put him back to +1.
Two posts are all that's required. Not 7 like you were thinking.

So you're one of the skill-giving guys eh?

How does one become a skill giver? Naturally I assume it involves Wizard School.

Just a question... I was grey for a while, then I jumped up to red, but when I look at my profile I can't see what I received positive skill for.

Hm, it should be under your user control panel. I also forced a recalc of rep a bit ago, which in theory should have changed nothing but in practice might have fixed a few errors so that might be why as well; I'm not sure if all reps stay in your control panel forever or if they go away eventually.
If you still can't find it PM me or the Mod account and I an look it up.
