Will Backlund retire a career long flame, second all time in games played, and be the most #### on Flame in the modern era? Probably!

Trading Zary for Cozens doesn't make sense. What would either team be accomplishing by doing this? Cozens has a higher cap hit, longer contract, and is older - he is somewhat more proven, but still... why would you even bother doing a trade like that?

They are the same age(birth year). It makes sense from a Flames perspective if they believe Cozens is the #1 Center they need but has hit the wall in a losing culture that is Buffalo. If he’s not then yes you just keep Zary and hope you find a 1C in the next couple drafts.
From Buffalos perspective I think the Flames would need to add for it to make sense to them.

Word via Friedman today that the lack of response on the high hit against Tage a few days ago has sent ripples through the room.
There has been discussion about changing the leadership group, one of the names being thrown out is Cozens, who is currently an Assistant Captain.
There is a lot of smoke around Cozens. I fully expect him to be moved prior to the deadline.
Still not convinced he will shine elsewhere or continue his decline.

Cozens would be gone today if Buffalo would soften their apparent asking price.

Yeah they are trying to move him as a 24 year old 68 point center...
But he's now a 24 year old 40-50 point center, on a $7.1M contract, that also has some questions on if he's best suited to actually play center at the NHL level.
Massive disparity in value between those two things.

Being an alternate captain, the Flames also have to consider the possibility that Cozens is a large contributor to the losing culture in Buffalo. A poor leader on a directionless team whose development peaked several years ago. He is not and will never be a 1C, and at this point, Zary shows more potential (from a progression standpoint) than Cozens does.

Precisely.
NO ONE is going to pay up for the 68 point center from 2 years ago.
He is a 40 pt player who still has some upside but also has some concerns surrounding him - if they want to move him, that's what the return is going to reflect.

And yet the rumoured ask is Zary + Coronato ++ for Cozens + Byram. Woof.

I’d do it. Wright looks like he figured it out

He is 23 trying to guide a floundering directionless organization with a coach who doesn’t like him, an organization that is giving up on him and laying some of the blame directly on him? Where do you see allegiance, or loyalty or success in that environment ? Should never have been made assistant.
Here he could just play and if he grows into the roll great, if not dont make him captain

I agree: woof
Forget the ++, I would not do Zary + Coronato for Cozens + Byram.
There is a reason Buffalo wants to move them. Not saying I wouldn't take them, just that I wouldn't give up those two for them.
Zary is a leader who elevates his teammates. Cozens is not.
Coronato is going to be a 30-40 goal, top line winger. Byram is extremely talented, but something smells off there - he worries me. In fact, they both worry me a little, which is why the price matters A LOT in this deal.

Buffalo is probably terrified of being burned in a trade again as well

Are we sure Cozens isn't another Mittelstadt? He was supposed to be a cup contender's answer for 2c and has gotten himself buried on their 4th line and right back on the trade block.
Not that Cozens isn't maybe an alright player but the idea of giving up anything of consequence for him is a bit scary.

Sabres fans all seem to think it was this fight with Hathaway that somehow broke Cozens and he's been passive and ineffective ever since being ragdolled a bit here.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/video/s...oss-to-flyers/
And they might be on to something...he had 7 points in the first 11 games that season which wasnt that bad but has been considerably worse since.
Pre-fight: 75 points in 95 games, 0.79 p/gp, 50.1% xGF at 5v5, 1.24 relative, 9.91% on ice shooting
Post-fight: 66 points in 121 games, 0.55 p/gp, 48.3% xGF at 5v5, -0.07 relative, 8.44% on ice shooting

Why should they though? They are not shopping him, they have made it known they will listen to offers. There is no pressure there to move Cozens.

WTH was Cozens thinking there...lol. Hathaway is a scary dude when he is in beast mode. The stare alone could KO most people.
