I hope the Flames sign Sergeev! Don’t want this guy to get away.

Since Sergeev was drafted four years ago, does he have to be signed this summer to retain his rights or is it next summer after he plays his fourth year of college hockey? His D+1 year was played in the USHL.

His rights expire with the Flames this summer and he can declare himself a FA

If he goes back for his senior year, the Flames will retain his rights until August 15, 2026.
However, he has the option of leaving college after this season and becoming a UFA. If he chooses to do so, he would become a UFA on June 1 or 30 days after he files his intention to leave college with NHL Central Registry, whichever is later.
...
Edit to add: If he signs with the Flames after his season ends, he could potentially burn the first year of his contract and collect a nice signing bonus while hitting RFA status at the end of next season. He could also sign a contract that starts next season and join the Wranglers for the end of the season and playoffs.
He can't do either of those things if he waits to become a free agent.

“He was just a big, raw project back then,” Sigalet said of Sergeev, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds. “He’s still a project, but he’s come heaps and bounds from where he was then.
Article content
“He’s a freak of an athlete. He’s a big kid. He looks massive in the net, but he’s super explosive. When we first drafted him, he kind of relied on his athleticism a bit too much. Now, playing a little bit deeper, it’s got him more controlled and now he’s just using his athleticism when he needs to. He’s not putting himself in bad situations and in bad spots from making those big saves when he doesn’t have to. It’s just a resource there now when he needs it.”

Yeah, it's just odd the Say signing came a day after the big Sergeev writeup in the Herald. Jordan Sigalet's effusive praise and the kid himself all excited with how his season went. Having said that, Sigalet doesn't sign the contracts..

Trevor Hoskins teammate and Niagara captain, Jay Ahearn entered the transfer portal. He was tied with Hoskins for team lead in scoring.

does he stay and is the leader of the team and gets prime minutes, or does he transfer to a "bigger" school, tougher competition, and possibly less ice time?
In a FAN 960 interview, Ray Edwards said (implied?) the Flames encouraged Sergeev to leave UConn (bigger program) for Penn St. where he would get more minutes.

It appears that North Dakota has fired their head coach Brad Berry, so it remains to be seen if the Littler Hobo also moves down the road. Maybe tomorrow he'll want to settle down.

saw Pike re-tweet this

the name Logan Terness might ring a bell for those into College hockey. He was Sergeev's UConn teammate two years ago. He went to the transfer portal to be Ohio's #1 just like Sergeev a year later.

I thought the Flames had Sergeev's rights until August 2026?

In some ways Say and Sergeev are comparable players. Maybe they signed the guy they like better already and Sergeev ends up elsewhere.

Or maybe they’re just hedging their bets in case Sergeev doesn’t sign

UMass and Minnesota tied 3-3 midway through the third. Good game.

Love how he scores, and then he heads down towards the goalie to celebrate as a team. I know nothing about the guy, but in this instance his instincts appear to be “we did it,” not “look at me,” and that is not a common thing in the world today. Good for him and them.
