It would be idiotic not to give him a 8 year deal this off-season. It will probably cost them more because he is on a super bargain contract currently for one more season. The Flames should feel fortunate to get him to sign a 8x8 contract, but I would not be surprised if he asks closer to 10 per season.

Wow, that would be something if a player who will be an RFA at the end of his current deal (with 2 remaining RFA years) got a $10M AAV contract after playing a single season, in a position in which results can vary greatly from year to year.

Shesterkin got 8 X 11.5, but that contract was offered in his 5th NHL season, and all 8 of those years are UFA years.

Having a goalie like this, right from the get go is unreal. We could be relevant for the next 10-15 years because of him.

A poll of PWHA writers finds Wolf.....4th in the Calder race.

Leader: Macklin Celebrini, San Jose Sharks
Finalists: Lane Hutson, Montreal Canadiens; Matvei Michkov, Philadelphia Flyers

Michkov is the only other player to earn first place votes for the Calder. Based on the number of mentions he received on voters' ballots, we're comfortable putting Hutson in that third spot just ahead of Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf.

In other words, it was only a matter of time before the San Jose Sharks rookie had the body of work voters needed to put him over the Philadelphia Flyers rookie in the Calder race, and here we are.

"Sometimes, the obvious answer is the correct answer," a Celebrini voter concluded.

After finishing second to Michkov in the December NHL Awards Watch, Celebrini pulled nearly 90% of the first-place votes from our panelists to take control of the rookie of the year race.

"A must-watch player already," a Macklin backer said. "He's absolutely electric despite having little help around him."

In terms of pure impact on his team, no rookie even comes close. He's the reason why this team is in the playoffs and not bottom 5 in the league.

I have no idea how somebody like Michkov is even comparable right now.

Goalies will always be in tough to win when there are other rookies are scoring. If he continues to get the majority of the starts and continues to win then he will get into the top three but he isn’t beating Celebrini this year.

The 23-year-old also sits fourth among all netminders in wins above replacement (3.8), goals above replacement (23.2), and standings points above replacement (7.2). Wolf has a strong chance to be named a finalist for the Calder, but actually winning it is easier said than done. A goalie hasn't taken home the honor since Steve Mason in 2009, but Wolf has certainly done enough to earn the No. 1 spot on these rankings at this point.

Some voters seem to vote based on disagreeing with the criteria. Such as favoring younger players. That drives me nuts. That's not your job. If someone is calder eligible your job is to pick the best one.

The Calder has been awarded 15 times since the last goalie won it (Steve Mason, 2009). That is by-far the longest time between goalie wins since the award was introduced. The second-longest was between Dryden in 1972 and Barrasso in 1984.

Wolf has jumped to the front of our Calder Trophy race and is back in the mix in our Vezina rankings after missing out last month. The rookie is among league leaders in all criteria and has registered a strong .914 clip since our January edition. Perhaps most impressively, his .937 five-on-five save percentage ranks second in the NHL.

Wolf's numbers trail some of his peers, but carrying the Flames to the playoffs would go a long way in earning some voter recognition. Calgary was widely expected to be rebuilding this season, but Wolf's emergence as the starter has transformed the state of the franchise. The Flames rank 29th in all-situations expected goals against per-60, but Wolf has been there to weather the storm time and time again.
