He's getting a comparable deal to him maybe better. Keep in mind Toews also is playing with a generational defender in Makar that makes things easier for anyone.

Toews is a hell of a player and would be our #1 Dman.

Anyways, I hope it's not above $7M AAV.

I mean when you have the opportunity to keep this group together for 6+ years, you just gotta do it. Even more so after a 1-3-1 road trip.

Time to stop signing vets and expecting the current core to suddenly transform from a mediocre bubble team to a contender.
I was fine with the Backlund extension because he is the heart of the team and will retire as one of the great Flames.
The rest of them have not proven anything. Need to go in a different direction. Use these guys as currency, get younger, faster, more competitive in the long term.

Some things get better with age they say.
Hockey teams might not have been one of them though.

The problem is Murray Edwards. He is showing himself to be quite the owner. Maybe stick to O&G and continue raping and pillaging industry and taking excessive wealth without paying taxes from the province that made you obscenely inter-generationally rich. Because what you really need is more money.
I think the city needs a new owner of this team. It’d be sweet if Calgary pulled a Green Bay and made a pitch. Old murr will make us over pay but then the Flames can finally be rid of what is actually, truly, preventing them from winning.

Flames are playing a very dangerous game at the moment, sign Hanafin up to 8 years and we will in a couple of years be known as the Old age Pensioners. Throw in the cost of living crisis, the extra cost to a ticket of the new arena and the team could find itself back in 2003 with only 14000 attending games. These owners are supposed to be excellent at running business yet they seem totally unable to get the flames beyond Mediocre.
This core has been unable to even get close too the cup even when they had two superstars, why on earth do they think it will be able to compete for a cup now with the same but much older core now, bonkers.
I know there are supporters who don’t want to go though a rebuild but if you are honest with yourself this lot aren’t going to get it done, no chance. They urgently need to start again and at least bring some hope with some young exciting players otherwise their new shiny arena you’ll turn out a huge whet elephant.

I think most would support a rebuild. That’s not the issue
Organizational appetite including ownership is the issue

Then Jiri it’s time for the fans to let ownership know that they have had enough and that it’s time to move forward.

There’s nothing we as fans can do. Even if that big, expensive new arena stays empty, Murray Edwards still laughs all the way to the bank because it’s the taxpayers footing the lion’s share of the bill.
The organization has no motivation to do anything to change. At this point they might as well keep signing UFAs to retirement deals and ride this failboat out for another 6-8 years. BT made sure we’re stuck on that rail no matter what now.

I think Hanafin still fits into a rebuild as you have to have some veteran players on the roster that can play. It makes a lot more sense than signing Lindholm as it provides more flexibility to blow things up. If they sign Lindholm then they are kind of locked in to an old forward core.

I don't think that's true. But it would take a massive amount of season ticket holders (including corporate holders) to cancel.

The smart thing would be to trade a known quantity in Hanifin who likes being in Calgary and then over-pay for a free agent this summer that plays LD to replace Hanifin probably at a higher dollar amount. He might even be as good as Hanifin.

No, hopefully Conroy has learned from Brad's experiences in free agency. He largely avoided it this past summer, hopefully that's a trend.
Free Agency is a nightmare, and a terrible way to build a team.

See it's this sort of attitude that means the flames are happy to keep going as is. The idea is to trade him for a pick or two and a young player. You do not go out and get a free agent at more money to fill in.

Then people need to stop going to games and send a message. Attendance is already looking bad to start this season with the lowest attended home opener in decades. If that doesn't speak volumes about the state of interest and confidence in the team, what does?
If the Flames are too dense to start looking at that or digest the trajectory of this franchise vs the rest of the league, then they deserve to start taking some heavy financial losses.

I would be pretty happy with a contract that start with a 6 and goes over 8 years. Gio signed his 6 year when he was 32. Getting Hanifin signed till he is 35 is good asset management considering how much the cap is going to start going up. Cap might be 10M higher in a couple years. He accounts to 6% cap hit right now, at 6.75 and a cap of 92M (expected in a couple years) he would be around 7%. Through his prime years that isn't terrible. On the back half of an 8 year, the cap % will continue to lower and probably end up sub 6%.
