Sutter's coaching was borderline sabotage, it was so insane what he did with top end players. Weegar should be a PP1 guy, easily.

So if Lindy could give slow (your words) Toffoli a career year, well..
Maybe Conroy can convince him that common sense and order are being restored

I honestly think sutter was trying to break the new guys into sutter players. This is sports not the flippin military.

Flames backing up the Brinks truck for Lindholm is a problem on it’s own. He’s not elite and they are waiting on him to make a decision.

Paying a player in the range of $8-9 m is not "backing up the Brinks truck." This is the going rate for an average top-line player, which is precisely what Lindholm is at this point.

I do not like the idea of losing Lindholm, but 9 million is way too much

It is in the ballpark of Horvat's deal, and less than Barzel's who are his closest comparables. $8 m today is not the same as $8 m three years ago.

I was curious if there's any team in the NHL that has 3 forwards over 28 with $7M+cap hits.
Playing around with Cap Friendly, I found 30 players total and just Washington with 3.
2 Rangers, 2 Islanders, 2 Preds, 2 Flyers, 2 Stars, 2 Tampa, 2 SJ.
Most of these contracts look terrible now and many are basically thank you contracts to past winners like the Washington & Tampa guys.
I don't want Calgary joining Washington on that list.

It was stubbornness transformed into blatant stupidity. Amazing what an ego can do to a person.

People are too worried about signing older guys to long term deals. As long as you build it out so you can buy the contract out at the end it not a big deal.
Kadri 7 year deal is structured to be a 5 year deal and you buy out the last 2 years if he's done and you've got like 2% of the cap locked for 4 years in the buyout. Weegar's is basically the same deal where you can buy out the last 4 years and have 2% of your cap locked up in the buyout.
Unless the guy gets a Huberdeau like contract - you aren't stuck with some 38 year old guy who can't play anymore.

I didn't think Sutter was an egotistical guy as he seems like the type of guy that would downplay awards but Warrener mentioned on Barnburner that winning the Jack Adams was the worst thing that could happen to Sutter and the Flames.

$9 million is the new 7.5 million. It will be even more palatable in 3 years.

It shouldn't be, given that the salary cap has been frozen for a few years.
This should only be the case if it was going up.
That one stupid GM overpaying causes every other player to use a s####y signing as a comparison.

The cap is going to skyrocket. Everyone knows that. It's inevitable the second escrow is paid back.

Sutter coached the same way as he always does.
His way of team building is to be the bad guy and motivate the players to prove him wrong. He's always done this. Just listen to all the interviews with former players. Picking on the young players was clearly designed to be the bad guy. He wanted the veterans to rally against him. He does that at every stop.
It doesn't work anymore. Conroy even said it in one of his interviews, he had no problem playing for Darryl, Iggy had no problem playing for Darryl, Rhett had no problem, but this was the old way. There's a reason why the older veterans succeeded and this includes Backlund and the "younger" players didn't. Kadri fits in age with the older group but I think his problems had more to do with the Stanley Cup hangover; none of the Avalanche players had a good season. Huberdeau and Lindholm are right on that cusp in terms of age, players this age and younger just don't respond to the old way anymore.
Darryl is not a bad person, he just did what he was brought here to do in the only way he knows and the only way that has brought him success. We asked for it not realizing society and players had changed. Getting tired of all the Darryl bashing. We asked for him, we wanted him, and we got him.

People are going to have to get used to Kadri being the centre for Huberdeau again. Not a lot of choices left.

I agree with all this except it can actually work in the modern age with the right players. He showed us that too. It was a bad mix. People need to get over it.

$9 mil is still a good contract for Lindholm. $10 mil is probably my limit.
The contract does not kick in until after next season and it is very likely the cap is $86 mil or more. Guys will be getting $14+ in the next few years.
I expect the following will be in the $12.5 mil to $15 or $16 mil in the next 2-3 years
McDavid
Matthews
Draisaitl
Rantanen
Marner
Kaprizov
Bedard
Could be more guys on this list but when these guys get this money...Lindholm's $9 mil won't look so bad.

I agree with the Jack Adam’s comment but I don’t agree that Sutter doesn’t have an ego. How many inferences did he make about “knowing how to win” and the fact he’s done it? And he’s the only true one who knows what it takes? That was always the underlying theme to me in so many press conferences.
Personally I think Sutters ego is off the charts, potentially the most egotistical coach I’ve ever seen. How else do you explain what really matters, which are his actions? His actions and bizarre coaching choices last year were literally rooted in his belief that he knew all. How else do you square playing Huberdeau on his off wing or throwing in Nick Ritchie in the most important shootout opportunity of the season?

When you say people need to get over it I get what you mean, and ultimately you’re right. But, can we not be still pissed for at least another month or two considering this guy just torched almost single handedly an entire ####ing season for what could have been a potential Stanley Cup contending year?
