Watching the presser without any preconceived notions, I came away thinking Connie might not be the most qualified managerial type, and he will learn along the way, but boy will this guy help make Calgary an attractive place among the community of players and will improve word of mouth.
What player doesn't want to go somewhere where you manager will feel like a best friend and confidant, who will be a positivd influence but also push them?
He will help the "human" side of things immensely.

Conroy on 960 says the Flames will "absolutely" have a captain next year. Says it'll be discussed in coach interviews. Adds that it bugged him every year they went without one.
Also said he'll be in contact with Phillips' agent. He drafted the player and said "he's done everything he can" in the AHL. Phillips did not commit to staying or leaving in his exit interview yesterday.

Calgary kid, guy who drafted him at the helm now, possibly Mitch Love coaching him.
Before Sutter was fired, it would've been stupid for Phillips to stay. Now, it'd be stupid for him to leave.

Not a wet blanket but not overwhelmed either to be honest.
Not sure what more I was expecting but something (or some things) seemed to be lacking from a guy who was AGM for that many years.
But I appreciate Conroy's personality - you don't have to be all serious and articulate to be a good general manager.
Surprised to hear that Tre was not good on communication - Conroy will improve that right away.
Hmm I guess I'm taking the safe road and will wait and see.

Maybe I was just hearing what I want to hear but it sounded like the team is willing to trade expiring contracts for youth until they move into the new arena

You mean the Flames may prioritize ice time for their prospects over scoring machine Kevin Rooney? Big turn of events if true

The most interesting thing I heard from Conroy in that Steinberg interview was that he thought the Flames missed on a couple of the recent drafts.
I love to hear that because I absolutely agree.

I think having 2 former GMs as AGMs is going to be helpful. They can take care of some of the more technical and administrative details, while Conroy can focus on building his vision and construction of the team.
I think it's rare that any GM has strengths in every area, so the AGMs fill in the gaps. I don't see the current situation any differently and it seems like they have a lot of self-awareness for where the gaps are and the types of AGMs that will best compliment Conroy.

What I heard was the team is looking to leave some roster spots open for younger players to battle for spots. Tre's m.o was always finding 4th line plugs to fill those spots. Ritchie, Rooney, Nordstrom, Leivo, Simon etc etc etc then the same for defense

I'm glad to hear that Conroy thinks the good draft and a young players are one of the main reasons to build a strong team with a long window to win the cup.
As he said like Tampa, the flames need really young and talented core players with a potential to carry this team next 5-10 years to have a chance to win.
At the moment we have:
Potential core players - Pelletier, Wolf, Coronato, Poirier and may be one of Solovyov or Kuznetsov?
May be good and support players - Andersson, Dube, Zary, Duehr, Ruzicka, Phillips.
If 3-4 of these 12 players become really core players, we still need another 3-4 players to add on them.
I hope we can get some really good prospects and high draft picks from Lindholm, Hanifin, Backlund, Toffoli or Tanev trades.

Man I hope we start going into every draft with excees picks and are always able to trade older expensive players for more picks because we have younger, cheaper internal replacements ready for those older players down on the farm.

Can't help but wonder if he was talking about the Valimaki draft, with Liljegren on the table.

Then we’re screwed already because I only took 3 aged 32yrs + players out of the lineup.
I’d be ok with a couple of lottery years if it meant a roster reset and we aren’t carrying 6or more players older than 30

2017 doesn't sound like recent to me.
He probably means passing on a guy like Stankoven in the name of size.

This feels like a rebuilding move. Bring in a guy that people love so it acts as a rubber band to keep people vested and be fed a bunch of stuff whole running this team with lower expectations. Shrewd move by ownership imo. Don't hate it infant, it's probably not the worst move to be made. Just hope that Conroy and gang are good at extracting the most in a trade.
