Yes, whatever would the Flames want with a 30 goal RW when they have a hole at RW?

Monahan + FLA 1st for Kadri
Tkachuk + Monahan + 4th for Huberdeau + Weegar + Schwindt + Kadri
Gaudreau walked and was a pure negative, but wasn't part of these transactions
|
I suppose - I look at the Tkachuk end result as him plus the cap dump of Monahan for Huberdeau, Weegar and Schwindt.
And for sure the result of the Monahan cap dump is freedom to sign Kadri, just like the dump of expected extension costs for Gaudreau and Tkachuk played into extending Huberdeau and hopefully Weegar.

Likely not far off the truth!
I finally have a late August this year where I am not doing exactly that for one my University bound kids!

I'd hope for a condition like "worst of the Flames/FLA '25 picks"

Flames have pretty decent wingers
Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Toffoli, Coleman, Dube, with Pelletier likely getting a good look.
Do not want Hoffman

Sure but if you are going for the whole enchilada you need one more goal scoring winger. Coleman could hit 20 as 2nd line RW possibly, maybe Dube too. Pelletier is too unknown to take that chance. Hoffman is a lethal sniper and a sure bet to hit 30 with our talent in the top 6.

Haha you knew that extra first would burn a hole in the Flames pocket.
They are allergic to having excess picks.
Monahan's hips cost us this.
Injuries suck.

Hoffman would be terrible under Sutter. He doesn't play defense...like at all. He'd be on the 4th line in no time if we got him. May as well go with the rookie at that point.

Monny is quite likely done. For some one to pay $6M or more in salary and take on that cap space is worth at least a first round pick.
It's based on supply and demand. I'm sure Calgary would have tried to move him without giving up a first, and likely found no takers.
It's clear they expect Monny to play; he'd have better value if they thought he'd be injured and on LTIR where insurance would pay a good portion of his salary.

If Nashville is involved I wonder if the player we get back is from them?
Whoever we get I really hope Montreal retains salary.
Then if we traded Lucic we could still be in on someone else?

If you are going for the "whole enchilada" you absolutely need young players on their entry level contracts to have breakout years. Writing off Pellettier as "too unknown to take that chance" is exactly how you get yet another playoff disappointment. Good teams trust their upcoming young players and take advantage of things like the book not being out on them and them way overperforming their cap hit.
Not to mention the simple motivation factor of players earning their spots in the now versus vets being handed them for past performance

Calgary doesn't have the cap space to take on Hoffman. Plus how about next year when the raises to Huberdeau and hopefully Weegar kicks in?

Dube outscored Hoffman last year. So did Coleman. And Hoffman was playing top line with Suzuki while Coleman was glued to Backlund and Dube played most of his minutes with Monahan (and the Jarnkrok).

A top 9 winger coming back would be good. The final thing we could use is another proven option on the wings.
Edit: just heard Hoffman is the rumoured return. If so, hopefully he can rebound.

My guess is future considerations(mid round pick)
depending on how Monahan plays.

Heck if Monahan wasn't going to be ready to play Calgary could have LTIR'd him just as easily.
If there's multiple teams it's complex but I would have liked a condition based on games played and/or goals scored by Monahan. The main way this trade looks bad is if Monahan busts out for 20 goals or so.
