No doubt! My friend's son just got offered $80K to work as an engineer in GP, and he gladly accepted it. Getting paid 10x that to flip burger? He'll be over the moon. Works for 5 years, and he is a $4M richer.

The post Lanny was responding to was one that said a team would not sign Tkachuk to a big money contract as a UFA. In that scenario, theoretically it would not be a year long rental as it would not cost a team any assets.

Fans said they were upset because we never gave Gaudreau a deadline.
Now there is a deadline with Tkachuk.
At least we will know soon!
I like the approach. We will get an answer in a week instead of months from now,
Also the drama is entertaining.

Right, I see that. Except it was not just a “big money” contract, which they all are. It was a contract worth 104 points. That’s a little more debatable. I actually responded myself to that OP.

Also, how is Columbus 10 years closer to a cup?
|
If the Rangers can fit all the top rookies into their salary cap, then good on them.
I think Columbus are ten years closer to winning the Cup than us because our best player left about fifteen million dollars on the table to play for them. What chance do we have of contending when guys are going to walk away for nothing and play for less money?

This has easily been the worst off-season I’ve seen from the Flames. I hope we can get some W’s soon. Seriously……please….

Hopefully the trade compensation from Tkachuk is a home run. We need something good to hang on to.

The only way that we can get any sort of value in return for Tkachuk is if there is a contract worked out ahead of time, or at least some indication that Tkachuk wants to sign long term with the acquiring team.
Otherwise the trade value on a $9-$10m pending UFA isn’t going to be much at all.
If I had to guess that’s what this extra two weeks is buying the Flames, an opportunity for teams to talk to Tkachuk and see if there is an opportunity to sign him long term.

Should have a thread on what the Flames can get on the Tkachuk trade in a week or two

Reading the Francis article he just wrote it seems like he is very convinced Tkachuk is getting dealt shortly. If his heart is set on St. Louis it is a tough deal to make. O’Rielly+Kyrou is really the only deal that makes sense from a cap perspective for the Blues and players without trade protection. Thomas was just extended so he is off the table and is Matt’s best friend. RoR only has a year left and older while Kyrou would be the main piece for the Flames. The Blues would have enough cap to give Chucky 10x8 and fill out the roster with minimum salary players.

It’s too bad that Gaudreau’s status wasn’t known prior to the draft.. that was the best case scenario for trading Tkachuk. Gaudreau’s departure is signalling the end of the line..
I just hope that the Flames embrace this and don’t do some half assed retool.. which is probably exactly what they’ll do.

Wat? they aren't even a playoff team guy...Gaudreau might keep them out of top pick territory and the contract will be bad in the later years most likely.

ROR/Kyrou/Neighbors/Greiss - Tkachuk/Vladar
Blues need a better backup than Greiss, Flames don’t, and have Wolf in the wings. Vladar gets you Neighbors.

I agree with your first paragraph and the backed sentiment that the trade deadline is not the optimal time for a Chucky trade. But then you follow it up with the painfully whiny garbage about how he’d draw Iginla like return? Is it just for effect?
|
No that’s not being negative man. If you trade him at the TDL , that’s the type of package you would get from a contender, low 1st and a bunch of B rated prospects or young players that they don’t need for their cup run
It’s better to trade him now . You may get lucky and get picks from teams that are not a contender but think they are.

Yeah, this is truly some “darkest timeline” ####. It really does show just how important coaching is (all those wasted years), and how cap efficiency dictates the day (all those wasted dollars on Brouwer/Neal). Too many mistakes along the path to today.

One thing I found interesting in the Rich Winter interview Francis did, was when they were talking about complimentary players Mangiapane could play with and the uncertainty of Tkachuk's status. Winter said regardless of whether Tkachuk stays or goes, Treliving will replace him with another good player and that he has full faith in Treliving to pull it off.
When I heard that, I couldn't help but wonder if Winter knows what Treliving's plan B is if he can't get Tkachuk to extend. He sounded really confident that whether Tkachuk stays or goes wouldn't be a concern for Mangiapane, and that was right after going on about how important it is to Mangiapane to have complementary players to play with why the Flames are a good fit for him.
I might be reading between the lines too much on that one.

I like Tkachuk and would be happy with a 8 year deal...that being said I think the Flames could totally win a Tkachuk trade.
Not sure why everyone is taking this as bad news...he won't be holding out, he won't be taking an offer sheet.
He will be signing or he will be traded...guy isn't walking as UFA which was the big fear in the other threads

Agreed, the absolute worst case scenario would have been for a team to sign him to a 1 year offer sheet, the Flames match but aren't allowed to trade him and he leaves as a free agent next year.

Assuming he does leave, it’s hard to ignore the fact that we’d have lost two 100 point players in one off-season considering we hadn’t had a 100 point player since what? 1993?
