Somehow.. someway.. I really hope the Flames can pick up Scheifele or Hertl for this playoff run.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Scheifele-Toffoli
Dube-Backlund-Coleman
Lucic-Ruzicka-Lewis
I would feel extremely confident about that. Especially if they can also pick up a depth defenseman.
|
I don't want Scheifele anywhere near this team.
Seems like a goof.
The personal chef stuff from a few years ago, his hit on the Hab in the playoffs, and then his goofy WWE "Lets go" after not landing a single punch in a fight last week has me shaking my head. (Tim Peel seemed to suggest he's an ass hat too)
But I wouldn't expect any big names, they don't have the cap space for it and the asset bleed to get a big time player and move salary would be painful.

4 70+ point seasons for Johnny in his career now. I really hope we can get the man locked-up in the off-season

Dream playoff scenario that is totally going to happen:
Flames avenge their playoff loss to Dallas
Flames murder the Oilers
Flames avenge their playoff loss to Colorado
Flames avenge their playoff "loss" to Tampa Bay
|
No. Edmonton shall not make the playoffs.
Never. Ever.
NEVER!
(The rest is fine though…).

Bizarre to imagine the Oilers playing in the second round, and impossible to do, since they aren't making the playoffs.

The Flames have been able to dominate teams this year. They've even been able to dominate some of the best teams. But they were in the Avs' barn and it was a playoff atmosphere. They weren't going to be able to dominate.
But I didn't see anyone struggling, I saw them battling. Shots were even, shot attempts were even, it was an even game, and getting to OT wasn't 'lucky', it was the most deserved event.
|
Very well said.
I think as hockey fans we often see the entire game as an event series from your own team. Good play. Bad play.
Rarely do people factor in what the other team is doing. A defenseman that makes a mistake isn't just throwing the puck away 9 times out of 10, he's under pressure from a very good forechecking team.

I think it’s easy to forget that Hanafin is still just 25 years old yet he’s closing in on 500 games played already with 489. There is still runway left for him to peak which is crazy to think because it feels like Lindy and Hanifin have been here forever and he’s taken noticeable steps in his game under Sutter as most players have.

Free agent signings are scary the day you sign them. You hope on a longer term deal you get half the contract good, some average and maybe a year of stinker.
Signing a guy that helped develop two other defenseman in his first two years on a contract is a huge bonus.
Tanev has made such a huge impact.

Those that play checkers would assume he would play against a lesser opponent vs Montreal and Markstrom the top team in the league. But that may send the message to a team high on a good winning streak, that they can get by Montreal with less than top goaltending and run best vs best against Colorado.
Same putting Vladar in for the comeback game with a back to back the next night. Or Vladar in vs the Leafs in Toronto.
But Sutter plays chess.
5 games in the next 7 days is likely to see a whole bunch of juggling from the coach...just hope we come out unscathed injury wise.
|
Nobody doubts Sutter is a smart guy, I always hate the smartest guy in the room comments because these guys are paid to be smart, not avoid being the smartest guy in the room by taking the easy way, or the way that fans will be happy.
So with that you know he sees what we do ... a bottom half of the forward ranks that isn't really working right now. He knows Ritchie can't finish, and that Lewis is in the right spots but his hands are shot. He sees that Lucic has had a tough month, and that Toffoli is playing on a line that can't produce, potentially wasting him.
Would assume he makes decisions based on things we don't necessarily see ... like how his teams have behaved in the past when they go up against teams that are physical through their line up. How he loses say 30% of his bench on those nights.
Then you look at Ritchie and Lewis and Lucic a different way. Also why he took a chance on a 450 pound third pairing.
If I had a $1 for every time someone on twitter pointed out Ritchie had no points, or that he needs to be fired to the sun I'd be wealthy. Think maybe points just aren't the point.

And every fan base hates their bottom six.
In a cap world you have less talented players plugging holes, but they draw hatred anyway.
Silly.

Smartest guy in the room was from the Enron affair and it was more that they’d tell you they were and that you were stupid for not understanding the brilliance of their plans. Sutter isn’t that way, really. He has a convention and sticks to it, but he’s also changed over time. Hell, Treliving isn’t even that way and he’s the guy people try to tag with it.
The fan base is obsessed with points, and Sutter knows that’s only half the battle. No doubt some of the prospects and AHLers that keep getting thrown into hypothetical lineups are better offensively. Sutter obviously just doesn’t trust their 200 foot game.
I thought it was a pretty good effort all over the ice, with all 4 lines. More scoring from the bottom nine would have been nice but with an offensive team like the Avs, you aren’t going to out-skill them, especially down the lineup so you need to outcheck them.

This is such a good point, Tanev coming in and settling down Hanifin and Kylington to the point where it’s completely solidified our top 4 this year has been an incredible addition to this team. I don’t think anyone would have thought the Tanev signing would have turned out this good but he’s quickly become the leader of the D corps and has helped push this team to the next level.

i think it was last week (maybe the week before) i had a game on. drew doughty was mic'd up for the game and during a face off draw he was asking the guy he was lined up against about his golf game and what his handicap was - it was pretty funny

My theory is they made a bet on OT. Johnny wanted to stick with MacKinnon the whole time. You could see when they were defending and he called Kylington off the coverage switch to man-v-man MacKinnon and then took off as soon as Lindholm sent Rantanen back to the gym.

MacKinnon is too intense and was taking too much of an aggressive posture at the circle, slowly pushing Johnny backwards, for me to believe it was a friendly chat. On a side note, if I could chose an NHL player who I imagine is the worst trash talker, Johnny is probably my pick

Also, IIRC (and by no means do I guarantee that), they were line-mates in that World Cup type tournament a few years back, on the under 23 team. And also IIRC, they were pretty dominant.
As a result, they likely became friends (which obviously would have been off the table during the playoff series in 2019)

I hope someone asks Johnny what they were saying. I'd be very interested. Although will likely just get the "we will leave that on the ice" answer.
