Not tough at all. The same team is now playing well and the only needle moving difference from last year, save for Coleman, is a legit coach.
How else, other than being on a heater, can the run in 2019 be explained when the team before and up until now has shown nothing close to that level of play?
I'm happy the team is playing the way they are and hope it continues.
If the gm isn't responsible for the results of the last 7 seasons who is? I agree with others that believe the Sutter hire is Treliving's last chance to keep his job. He has done some good and some bad and the results until now have been underwhelming.

Increasingly there is quite a lot of variability in the NHL where you have teams move around the standings more. Basically there are really good teams (very few) and really bad teams and then a huge squishy middle that shifts around.
When we talked about things required to go right this season so far many have with perhaps some bonus items:
- Rasmus has rebounded after a pretty bad year
- Tanev has continued to play really well
- Kylington has taken a step
- Gudbransson has exceeded expectations (at least fan ones)
- Hanifin isn't a world beater but is delivering to expectation.
So that has stabilized the blueline.
That's one.
Markstrom has rebounded from a bad second half in a big way to be the guy the Flames thought they were getting
That's two.
Then you have a pretty fantastic start from key offensive contributors led by Jonny, Lindholm, Eat Bread and increasingly Tkachuk.
That's three.
Now can all those things sustain themselves? Probably not but as long as they have a few of those key things continue - they'll be in good shape. And then you have the possibility of Monahan rounding back into form, and possible increased contributions from someone like Dube who seems on the verge of going on a heater.
How much of that credit goes to Sutter v. Tree? I don't know and I don't know that I care. No question that Sutter has this team playing with more of a identity and as a unit. It's had a bigger impact than I would have expected. But I don't think that means that one can't also give Tree credit for giving Sutter a team that matches his style. And the acquisitions of the last couple years (Coleman, Markstrom, Tanev) are large factors. And this year's depth acquisitions (Vladar, Gud, Lewis, Pitlik) are fitting in their roles nicely. I would say Zadarov is the only disappointment but he has been better of late, though scares the sh** out of me whenever he's got the puck.
I would add the team does seem better conditioned this year. The big question for me is still the mental toughness. Last night was a good sign, that was a pressure game - to avoid a losing streak which would have stretched to 3, in front of a home crowd, on HNIC, and after all the hub-bub over the game the night before for NYR. This team hasn't performed well in big games the last couple years - that was different last night.
Need to see it though more. How do they handle their first real losing streak for instance. How quickly do they snap out of it.
Still lots of open questions, but this start is a massive exceeding of expectations. You don't make the playoffs in the first few weeks but you can sure miss them.

I have shesterkin in my pools. I’m happy to lose this week considering he let in 6 for the good guys.
That goal being called back was huge. Fox thought he silenced the hate. He only added to their fire. I’m proud of the domes energy. Like the hound said: nothing motivates like hate.
Screw that loop hole exploiting punk. The NHL needs to fix that but hey we are in the rags’ heads. It’s crazy how bad they look playing us.
Darryl has really become the engine for this squad. Who knew some accountability was the recipe for this group.
They still have a long way to go before I start praising treliving any more. So far they are on a ten game point streak and that is impressive enough.

I mean it would be hard to imagine the GM keeping his job after another dismal season, his eighth at the helm.I didn’t think that was going out on a limb especially with only one year left on his deal after this IIRC.
Irrelevant after how they’ve played through eleven games but this board just can’t seem to get enough of arguing about the GM.
I think it’s fair to say some people’s minds are made up about his performance and will probably take more than 11 games to change it. 11 playoff games might be different I suppose.

I wonder how much weight to put on the fact that 3 of the top forwards are in contract years? You look at Capfriendly and exactly half of the NHL roster do not have contracts for next year. Add a coach with a track record for success and you have the recipe for a highly motivated group.

Probably a factor for sure. Friedman last night was also talking about that the lack of crowd perhaps impacted Tkachuk more than others - as a guy that feeds of emotion. He was a bit off in the first couple of games but since then has been really good.
Johnny has been fantastic and indeed perhaps the contract is a factor.
Probably a mix of all factors.
I think confidence is always big too. For this group, a good start was crucial.

I think some people like to trot out Treliving right after losses and not give him much credit after wins, but what really matters is now it appears they have got it right. Treliving himself admitted that he needed to be better, and that "we need Darryl" when he hired him. In some cases, it is a learning process and obviously, Brad wants to win. Darryl is an excellent piece to the puzzle because he has been there, he has won at this level and he has done it with teams that have struggled. Hopefully, some hardline fire BT posters will back up a bit and give Brad a bit of rope; Especially now that he has identified the right coach for the team. Let's take the focus off Brad let him do his job and enjoy the Flames coming out of the gate. The Flames are playing like they are on a mission and they have some young emerging players. Lots to be excited about.

I think it can be explained as having a talented collection of players capable of playing that way, but absent the coaching to sustain and effectively manage it. Based on what we are seeing it is becoming increasingly difficult to fault the GM for his roster decisions. The coaching debacle of the last four or five years is another matter, but it looks like he has figured that out as well.
