If there is no Eichel and no Johnny next year, I think many STHs rethink their commitments, IMO of course.

The alternative is you trade him.

I don't know if that is an option that is available for this franchise. Unless they are right terrible. I mean they held on to Giordano last season hoping for a miracle.

Yeah I wonder if the best thing for this franchise is a terrible year.
This is a strong draft and it would force them to make some calls on some guys.
I do not believe they will let Johnny walk for nothing. He'll either be signed or traded. I truly believe that.

It’s all speculation, but I would guess Gaudreau wants to play somewhere where he’s not the best offensive player on the team.
He’s 160 lbs and plays the least valuable position on the ice. It’s hard when he’s the only straw capable of stirring the drink.
I love the guy and want him to stay, but unless we bring him Jack Eichel, why wouldn’t he just sign with the Penguins in 9 months?

True, he will be signed or traded. The trade return will enrage many fans. The time to get anything substantial for Johnny has passed.

I think they will absolutely hold onto him at the deadline if they are in the mix. This team is all about winning now there is no other option so being on the bubble is the scariest situation for this team at the deadline. I really hope they are firmly in or out by March.
If this team just misses the playoffs or loses in round 1 I think Tkachuk absolutely requests a trade and Johnny will likely test the market. There is absolutely a reason to believe this team will put itself in a spot to potentially lose Johnny for nothing.

I do hope you are right. But if the Olympic break comes and we are 2-3 points in/out of the playoffs (most likely scenario IMO), are we really trading him? I find that hard to picture...

Some notable Penguin UFAs next year include Malkin, Carter, Letang and Rust.
Notable UFA goalies include Samsonov, Keumper, Campbell, and Georgiev.
They’ll have the cap room, and they’re going to be all in during the last three years of Crosby’s contract - who, btw is still just 34.
Burke has been involved in Johnny’s last two contracts.
Gotta make it worth his while, Brad.

Wouldn't one assume they will be trying to re-sign both Malkin and Letang?

Letang, yes. Malkin, I’m not as sure.
He misses too much time.
9 points in the last three playoffs combined, and only 17 in the last four years.
Johnny doesn’t miss games and he’s six years younger. Hasn’t had a Single major surgery.
Again, all speculation.

Letang for sure. Malkin is getting a bit banged up.
I guess if we're all agreed you have to overpay Gaudreau to get him to stay you have to then set a limit on how much it's worth it to keep a LW, even one of his calibre. Fort the record, I think Panarin makes way too much and the only wiongers I think are worth $9M or over are Kucherov, Stone and Rantanen. Maybe Panarin, but not $11.6.

Samsonov is an RFA.

New Jersey has to be considered a team that will go heavy after Johnny if he gets to the open market. They have a ton of cap space and a bunch of young up and coming players so they can pay big money and offer a market much closer to home.
Flames need to sign Johnny now or go on a big run to give Johnny hope this team can win

The thing about the Pens is - are they really in a reloading mood, or are they going to go for one of their (successful) rebuilds. They sign Johnny, but their centres are 34 year old Sid, maybe 35 year old Malkin, Teddy Blueger and no really exciting centres on the way up. I just don't see the value in going out and getting him for them.

They can trade for a #2C - they have their next three 1sts and 2/3 2nd rounders.
Sid hasn’t slowed down - though we’ll have a better idea of how true that is or isn’t following this season.
Gambling on Sid and the Penguins vs gambling on the Devils to figure something out seems like a pretty easy choice too.

I think this is stupid speculation. He's definitely asking for a contract in line with "best offensive player on his team. Wanting to move elsewhere would undermine his value as such.
Sounds like such a cop out. I don't believe this is the case at all.

Do you believe you can win a championship with Johnny Gaudreau has the best player on the team?
It would be an unprecedented accomplishment.

Sure, we might believe that. But if Johnny really wants a contract that starts with 9, he cannot believe that.

Marner got one that starts with a 1 and he is not the best player on his team. Same for Tavares.

Sid hasn't slowed much, it's true. But sometimes that wall hits pretty hard. I'd guess, though, he has 3-4 more solid years in him.
Trading for a 2C, though - like who? And are they prepared to mortgage that much? They aren't tremendously solid in net or on D after Letang. I think they will be a good team as usual, but not a great team. I was not surprised at all they got bounced by the Isles.
