Hahaha, I actually like the "weird" side more, personally.

I love the look of the new Islanders arena. It may not wow you like some of the glass buildings but it's never going to look bad even when it's old.

Looks much like the arena in Dallas. A lot of baseball stadiums have the brick aesthetic which is very classic looking.
I agree you don’t have to go all glass to look striking but some distinctive elements would seem essential vs. large brown walls with beige trim.

That's pretty much the case for all of these arenas (not always weird, often just bland on the other sides).
In both Minnesota and Pittsburgh, the photos you usually see show off the big glass curtain walls that look great, but the other 3 sides of the building are just big blank, mostly-windowless, brick walls.

It also fits in nicely with the existing buildings at Belmont Park. I like the look of the arenas in Vegas and San Francisco, but they'd look really out of place at Belmont Park.

Locally people complain that a brick buildimg would be "Stampetecture" and corny western. Elsewhere brick buildings are "classic".

Definitely glad we're not getting Stampitecture or what the Islanders are doing. I think sports arenas work best when they look forward, not backwards. They also seem to have a shorter shelf life than most buildings, so I think they can ofter an opportunity to be a venue for tech/design experimentation, knowing that they don't have to be timeless.

That’s right. When your design sucks you better make sure no one knows about it until it’s built and it’s too late.

Haha! That was my 1st thought. Don't reveal your design, so you don't get fired instantly(I know it's an early render for anyone already in attack mode).

To each their own. I like the way the Islanders building uses glass and light with the various towers around the building to provide a brighter, more modern look.
IMO some of these brick baseball stadiums like Camden yards, Oracle Park in SF and Minute Maid Park are really nice. But baseball has always embraced its past.

We must go forward, not backward. Upward, not forward. And always twirling, twirling, twirling towards no line ups for the washrooms!

False. 90% of people will be nowhere near being able to afford the price of entry with the inevitable insane ticket prices. Being pretty from the outside or having some fun stuff around it is the limit of the return most will get for their tax dollars.

That isn't what I'm talking about at all. As this thread clearly shows, people look at the early, early prelim renders that are mostly for massing and haven't had materials and finishes selected and start to freak out. More people are quoting AC's post with a prelim render than the cleaned up render. It's not a final design either, but it's been made to look more realistic and fancy, which is what the general public expects. Sending extremely preliminary information to the public leads to people jumping to unnecessary conclusions that waste everyone's time when they need to respond to them.
Most clients I've worked with will only release a render when it's a complete enough state that the questions are focused into only a few areas like "why did you choose this material?" or "why aren't there more windows?", rather than "why is it all black?" or "this looks like babby's first SketchUp model". If the design sucks, that will probably be talked about regardless of what stage the render is released.
I should note that I have no affiliation with this project, so I'm not trying to defend the design. It's more that it's really clear about how people are examining the images in this thread, which should be a good lesson to some about sharing that info too widely.

If the front fascia is like a giant LED screen like how Fremont Street has that long overhead one in Vegas. This could be pretty neat actually.
