Anybody know anything about this Gustafson kid? I see he was drafted in the 2nd round by Pittsburgh. So he’s got to be a somewhat decent prospect.

A 1st overall pick would do this team a world of good.

I saw some teamwork just now, Lindholm opened the bench door for Eatbread at the end of the period. It’s a start, I guess. Third period here we go.

Kelly made that save by Markstrom out to be goaltending genius
Trying to make the game interesting I guess

It's a pretty massive save considering the time

We could really use a forward though. And the top 4 picks are all D. None of them game changers. This is not a good draft year.

How come the d-men never pinch anymore??? So frustrating to watch, keep the pressure up in the offensive zone with the d men holding the line.

Because with speed you have and cutting across, the goalie assumes you may going across and opens up. The five hole was in fact open, he needed to close the blade more to direct it back through the legs.
And from the angle Rinaldo is at, doesn't look like at it on TV, but he didn't really have the angle to shoot from there, so he did have to cut all the way across and with the traffic you're entering, not a guarantee you're going to have that same clear path, momentum and clean possession to get past the goalie to that far post, nevermind, given the speed and angle you're at, to hit that seemingly wide open side once you get there.
If you're not confident, as Rindalo is not a pure goal scorer, he wanted to make sure he got the chance on net then take the risk of losing the puck as he tried to navigate through the crease and hopefully get the puck around the goalie.

Gotta be jealous watching a goalie get a NHL game and getting to face the Flames when they are playing like this!

Well we're making DJ Smith's life easy at least. His speech in the locker room right now is likely "Well, they're fine playing on the perimeter. As long as we keep them there we're good"

The Senators are the worst defensive team in the league. They surrender 3.91 goals per game.
This Flames team is woefully under skilled, built upon a weak core, and has exceptionally poor centre depth.

Why do the flames play this way in Ottawa? Is this a mental thing? Like this team has a collection of guys who have scored well in their careers.
Monny has a wide open shooting chance and flubs it. Too indecisive. It’s like they always defer to thinking pretty play over gritty play. Get the puck on net there sheesh. Hope for a rebound with that winger closing.

Although he was a 2nd rounder, most of his career besides the play in Sweden has been in the AHL for the Senators farm club. I think he played world juniors. However with the exception for this year, his numbers in the minors are pretty bad in seasons where he played more then 20 games. Sub 900 save percentage.

Dominant period, but low danger hockey I've ever seen.... Flames had the puck the whole time, tons of time in the Sens end, and lots of shots and yet it never looked like they would score. The lack of gamebreaking talent is extremely evident.

It’s important in terms of timing but was pretty routine, dead center of his right pad along the ice
A goalie would have had to work to *not* save that one

This feels like one of the most boring Flames games this season. I don't even think I'll come back for the third as I'd rather watch March Madness at this point. My Bud Red Light will tell me if I should check back in on the Flames.
