That is what I would like to see as well. I think Mangiapane would work well with Monahan and Gaudreau.

I think the first 10 games are going to be sloppy around the league. Short training camp and no exibition games. Yhe first month in a regular year is pretty sloppy.

the bump back makes a tonne of sense.......when mixed in with other zone entries. By bumping it back, the Defenders have to either stop or slow at the blue line, making it that much tougher to control the gap or hold the blue line.
The key is to vary the entries (soft dump, hard rim, bump back, attacking with speed) so the defenders can't time the entry and cheat. Calgary's problem is, it is the sole entry used on the 1st powerplay, making it very easy to disrupt.

I'm not sure if PP shifts factor into shift lengths and therefore could stretch them out but there are some guys who are looking at 50 second shifts.

Some the vets are around 37. I think this goes back to playing to team identity and doing the little things plus playing a team game (4 lines rolling).

I’m surprised at the love Markstrom is getting. To me he was just “okay”. Made some good saves at the end, but to say he was “phenomenal” is just straight up wrong. He let in 4 goals. He was average and kept them in it though, and that’s really what you ultimately want in a starter so I’d say he was just okay.

Tanev- now he I thought looked like our best defenceman.

Also to start the first period I thought it was good to have Bennett and Lucic for this game - in case opponent wanted to start something from last year.

However if CGY is ever expecting a push back because they dominated the previous period you have line up Lindholm and Backlund back to back shifts right off the top for the responsible 2 way game.

If CGY needs to pushback themselves you go with whichever lines have Mangiapane and Bennett on them. Perhaps try this to start games - play the relentless puck pursuit guys who are going to attack the net. Monahan line too can do this.

I'm happy the flames got tarps that cover all the way to the second bowl behind the bench's. I think it has looked terrible in the arena's where the frame is still half empty seats.

Edmonton has its 4 Giordanos, why can’t we have 4 Dubes.

I'm not gonna lie, Markstrom has shown me nothing special. Two games so I'm not gonna make any conclusions. But he's done little to quell the pain of our goalie situation for a decade.

But Tanev? Really? Andersson I thought was miles ahead of everyone.

I thought Tanev had a strong game and looked better than Hamonic ever did in a Flames uniform.

I thought Rasmus and Gio were scrambling around alot, and he didn't look especially poised on the PP. So for one game, I'd say Tanev was the best rearguard.

Andersson was great in the 1st, then struggled.

Tanev was solid the entire game.

I thought Gio's fortunes were similar to Andersson's (no surprise as they were playing together)

I thought Hanifin had a pretty good game as well (maybe because of Tanev). But I didn't like the hit.

It's been one regular season game. If we are having this discussion in the 2nd half of the season we may have a problem but as of now there's not a lot to take from these early games as it's essentially exhibition hockey and the Flames are notorious slow starters.

Tanev played his ass off last night, I hope the collective malaise and complacency of the core doesn’t rub off on him.

Here is what I would like to see:
Tkachuk - Bennett - Dube (balanced line, starts in D and O equally)
Gaudreau - Monahan - Mangiapane (possession line, more offensive zone starts)
Leivo - Backlund - Lindholm (shutdown line, most defensive zone starts)
Lucic - Ryan - Nordstrom (crash and bang line)

Why not really mix it up in the top 9?

Monahan and Gaudreau look disinterested still, such stupid mistakes last night. They didn't look elite. It was game one of a weird season, so I'll give them a few weeks to get going but I feel like nothing has changed since last year.

First thing I said to my friends after the 1st period was that if they can play like that for 60 minutes then we can win the division. But guess what? Straight back to boneheaded plays (Lucic on Scheifele goal to start it off), lack of energy, no hustle on pucks, no urgency, sitting back. The new guys played the best, showing they have something to prove or need to earn it.

Anyway, I'll hold off on jumping to hard on these guys for the first month but it looked like a normal Flames game of the last two seasons.

Shocking that when you don’t change major parts of the team that don’t work, you don’t see a lot of change in outcome.

But hey, maybe the Flames have this all figured out and the answers are somewhere in the room.

Well I think they do believe they have what it takes with the adjustments they made over the last 5 or 6 months.

I am not sure that is the case, I don't know that this team can win with Monahan and JG as the leaders. Gio seems to be a 2nd pairing guy now, the new core needs to take the reins and lead this team. I think that could be Tkachuk, Anderson and Bennett if they can make a step, with guys like Lindholm and Backlund to support.

Who knows what will happen but like I said before, I'll give them a month to get their stuff together and show that they can lead, otherwise I am done with them. Trade those two guys for a mini-rebuild. Are they going to help us win the cup? I don't see it.

3 goals in regulation

A break away from maybe the best shooter in the game, a 5 on 3 cross seam one timer, and a ridiculous give away in the slot that he actually saved the first one.

Markstrom was very good IMO
