In the modern era, here is a history of the 24th and 26th overall picks
24th:
2020 Connor Zary
2019 Philip Tomasino
2018 Filip Johansson
2017 Kristian Vesalainen
2016 Max Jones
2015 Travis Konecny
2014 Jared McCann
2013 Hunter Shinkaruk
2012 Malcolm Subban
2011 Matt Puempel
2010 Kevin Hayes
2009 Marcus Johansson
2008 Mattias Tedenby
2007 Mikael Backlund
2006 Dennis Persson
2005 T.J. Oshie
24th Overall has some pretty solid players, but also worth pointing out that we actually traded for pretty much the worst player taken at that spot...
26th:
2020 Jake Neighbours
2019 Jakob Pelletier
2018 Jacob Bernard-Docker
2017 Jake Oettinger
2016 Tage Thompson
2015 Noah Juulsen
2014 Nikita Scherbak
2013 Shea Theodore
2012 Brendan Gaunce
2011 Phillip Danault
2010 Evgeny Kuznetsov
2009 Kyle Palmieri
2008 Tyler Ennis
2007 David Perron
2006 Leland Irving
2005 Matt Pelech
26th Overall is...depressing. We are pretty much the only team to draft outright busts.
|
I’m amazed that 4 jakes were taken in a row with the 26th overall pick.

You're counting Shinkaruk aren't you.
Should be 5. Still high, but then again I think MTL might be up there too.

The States have ridiculous goaltending depth with Knight and Wolf but it's the only advantage they have over Canada. No Nick Robertson is really going to hurt.

The players aren't physically as fast, but the games themselves just play faster, because NHL hockey has the life coached out of it.

You forgot that the only joy Flames fans have is schadenfreude.

No.
Especially when the conversation was directly related to him being better than a Flames prospect. Had to balance it back out.

Where else would you expect Flames fans to find joy? In the Flames' long and noble history of winning?

OK then.
Im sorry...but you are just wrong. Nothing happens at the junior level faster than it does with professionals. Period.
Kids dont know how to play defense like the pros do...but that is anything but "having the life coached out of it".
What happens in the show is not only better defense, it happens faster as does every other aspect of the game.
What you are suggesting is that mistake filled hockey makes for better hockey.....and thats just not true, though many consider it more entertaining that way. Its why so many current and former junior superstars fall flat on their face when they hit the NHL...or even lower leagues.

Of course junior players are not as talented as NHLers but the energy of these games far surpasses most NHL games and that has nothing to do with mistakes. The talent level is still absurdly high, and while the players aren’t as fast, less structure allows for more end to end action IMO.

It is called sarcasm. People used to use it not long ago before everybody took everything seriously and were looking for some reason to get upset or be offended. The fact that multiple people took that as me actually ragging on the poster is a reflection of what is seriously broken with today's society. I can't believe given how that was written anybody took that as rude, come on people, lighten up a bit.

I would agree insofar as the NHL regular season is concerned, but the claim made in this thread was that the U-20 tournament surpasses even the Stanley Cup playoffs, which is plainly false, even from an entertainment standpoint.

I don’t agree with “plainly false” sorry. From an entertainment standpoint, I would put most World Junior elimination games just below game 7 playoff games.
If my choice is some random first round playoff game 2, or Sweden vs Russia in a medal game it’s not close for me.

So, you would agree, then, that Gary Bettman does not waste time worrying that the SC Finals might not be as exciting as the WJC tournament. For every Sweden v. Russia medal game there are certainly also some dogs.

Personal interest...
Is your fandom of the Panthers purely based on geography?? Or is there something else I am missing?
I can appreciate other teams after living in cities for a while, but it takes something significant to actually trigger fandom.
(e.g. if you lived in Dallas, would you be a Stars fan? If you leave Miami, will you remain a Panthers fan?)
