It was a mistake for sure.
Because what it did was change the value of those draft picks BEFORE it had been determined who owned them.
Spots 9-15 (or whatever these teams owned) each held a 1-2% chance of winning the lottery - nothing to affect their position in the play-ins. However, once the partial lottery was held, it changed those picks to having a 12.5% chance of a 1st overall - substantially increasing the value of those picks.
It is unlikely that it changed the behavior of any of the teams, however, it should never have happened in the first place.
The entire draft should be happening NOW, now that we know who all the participants are.
Really bizarre and incomprehensible why the league would have done it this way.

I doubt the league would've okayed any trade of these picks. Also, it's past the trade deadline, so no players acquired could've suited up. ??

Yes, teams could have traded these picks.
More importantly, losing the play-in became a little more valuable. That should never have happened.

Im not sure why folks prefer Florida. This team has drafted the following:
Ekblad (1st)
Barkov (2nd)
Huberdeau (3rd)
Gudbransson (3rd)
Ellerby (10th)
Frolik (10th)
Olesz (7th)
Horton (3rd)
Boumeester (3rd)
Weiss (4th)
Since 2001 as top 10 picks which includes 7 top 4 picks. They've had plenty of chances to screw up prospects and they have.
A team like Minnesota and Nashville deserve it imo, expansion teams of the last 20 years that have tried their hardest to win and not tank.
As much as I dislike Winnipeg, I'd be ok with them getting it to.
Toronto / Pittsburgh / Edmonton / Florida have had plenty of top picks in last 20 years.
NYR get all the UFAs and prospects they want.

I chose Florida because it gives them more of a reason to rebuild/retool and trade one of their high end players. I selfishly want Barkov and know that they will not be moving him any time soon.
I also chose Florida as my first target to get him because Lafreniere is not going to address their problems on defense. Plus, would rather Florida be the East team that lands him than Toronto, NYR, and Pittsburgh.

I prefer Florida because it's the only team out East in this lottery that isn't Toronto, Pittsburgh or the Rangers.

Wait, what players on that list did Florida “screw up”? That’s a great list.

Oh great, the leafs are winning another lottery. It's not Edmonton no-good, but it's still pretty damn shameful. Both of those arrogant organizations deserve to lament their own rot rather than celebrate.
And Carolina will be steaming if the leafs win Lafreniere, because they literally got nothing for that pick.

They would get next year's first in that scenario
(but this year's would be much better because it isn't likely to be as high next year, plus, now is better than a year from now)

For me, it's anyone but Pittsburgh or Edmonton. Both have been spoiled in the past by lottery luck.
I also think Pittsburgh is still a really good team that just underachieved this year.
Florida would be my choice, mainly because they have little impact on the Flames, and very minimal representation in the Western Canadian media.
Toronto would suck because of the media attention-whoring that would happen, but I can tune that out pretty easily.

Having a French Canadian star in Florida would probably be good for the league.

Even if they didn't screw up any, the point that poster made of them having had their fair share of high picks still holds true.
