You could apply that logic to so many players....
For a d-man that total does not usually happen by accident. And certainly less so than forwards doing it while playing next to elite guys.
He's on track for over 30 points and 10 goals this season, so even if his career average is somewhere in the middle, that's pretty decent.

Going out to get a one-dimensional offensive d-man who can definitely put up points seems like a smart move to try and jump start the powerplay. The powerplay is currently 18th, and that's after some improvements to it's productivity over the last few weeks. For most of the year it was in the mid 20's.
Gustafsson could be the spark that could help them score a lot more on the PP, and possibly go on a strong run to end the year. I think we've been missing a player like this for a while now, and it fills a significant need that nobody else was able to fill in the organization.
|
Exactly.
One dimensional player that is not good defensively. However, that one dimension is something the Flames desperately need.
And he is pushing guys like Davidson and Yelesin out of the lineup. So it's not like the bar that he has to replace on the defensive side is very high either.

I'm pretty alright with the Gustafsson trade. He can get pucks to the net. Could be cheap to re-sign too for next year.
Sucks that Tree decided it wasnt fair to pull the rug out from under some of the forwards who could clearly not be here and take away development time away from the likes of Kylington and Yelesin.
Ah well, let's hope Forbort and Gustafsson pair well.
And I do in fact like that this move takes a bunch of ice off of Gio who can focus more on dominating 5v5.

Okay, that’s quite the one-timer on him. That’s an element we don’t really have on the PP currently.
In that clip, those were legit goals. Not softies.

Basically the same offensive stats as Gio this year, better than the rest of the Dmen.
Though yes, he is never going to put up 60 again.

I think thats extremely unfair just because one has been in the NHL for 5 seasons longer than the other lets look at the PPG for a more telling story if you want to go that route.
Barrie career PPG .625
Gustafsson career PPG .542

Ignore his 60 point season and his little rookie 15 game season and he is still .45 ppg. That's a 37 point guy, which, even last year would have put him behind only Gio from the back end.

That's not unfair at all. That's a player who has consistently put up numbers vs a guy who has put up numbers once and shown none of that flash the following season. Barrie is worth a 1st. Gustafsson is worth a 4th or 5th on average and a 3rd on TDD.

You should check out the highlights for all six of his goals this season. That shot of his is delicious.

My expectations are basically a more offensive Kylington, which I’m totally okay with. I’m actually pretty excited about this pickup. I think it has potential to be really good for us.

I'm starting to get a bit excited about this pickup. Specifically, I'm hoping the true threat from the point opens up more room for Gaudreau. Currently, opposing teams can just play tight against Gaudreau on the PK and keep our d-men to the outside. Hopefully having a big heavy shot from the outside changes all of that.
Also...that is a very quick release.

No it's not. That's like your opinion man.
Then why didn't Barrie get a first?

We did have Hamilton on the team....and also Giordano had 74 points last year.

Why not just put Kylington on the PP and save the 3rd round pick?

5 years difference in age?
Kylington will be fine in time. He's 22.

One minor item of note. It's Erik not Eric.
