Interesting.
Pedigree was the wrong word in that case, replace with ability.

If they had a WAR stat in hockey we would see that Jankowski and Bennett combine a touch over 4.3 million in cap hit and that they are bringing back 1.5 in value and that replacement level guys would not be a huge step down. At some point smart organizations will identify these issues and be able to move on from these types. Both guys might become better elsewhere but it's becoming pretty clear that it won't happen in Calgary.

So rather than be scared about these guys becoming better after they leave. Focus on finding other players who will fit in your system and let them move on. If they become better after they move on thats great. Don't be spending 4.5 million because you are still emotionally tied to old draft picks.

It would be extremely bad asset management to move them for minimal returns and then have them turn into valuable NHLers. It's not about emotional ties, its about asset management. You can't give them away for little to nothing.

So Treliving has to set an appropriate price for them and not move them for any significantly lower than that. That would be smart asset management, smart managing.

Jankowski is nearing 26, approaching his prime years. There should be an upward projection or at the very least continuance of past performance to believe that he’ll be a valuable NHL’er (whatever that subjective term means). Jankowski has fallen off a cliff, it happens, but the belief that we’re gonna lose out on a “valuable NHL’er” is far fetched. Or, I can concede that maybe he’ll be a “valuable NHL’er” to another team, just not us.

That's not really asset management, asset management looks at the big picture, opportunity costs, risks and the whole package of your assets.
That's fixating on a single asset instead of managing your assets systematically.

Asset management includes the impact on players who would be replacing them and what impact more time could have on those players and the team's success overall.

It also includes what you would do with the excess money and how that could be applied to other assets.

Asset management is looking at the cumulation of all of this, fixating on the single player and what they could become is the exact opposite of asset management.
