Are you suggesting that the Flames haven't tried and aren't always trying to get rid of that contract?

Time to retool. The mental weakness of these guys is the biggest concern. Some fresh players are needed. See if you can pick up Hoffman. Look at signing Kane in the off-season but see if you can dish Brouwer with a prospect for a 4th or something. If someone gives you a decent pick then you trade stone. Versteeg for picks. Keep Brodie until offseason unless you can move him to Ottawa for hoff. If ferland can get you a first and second maybe consider it? We’re close if we can get rid of some deadweight and add a few wingers.

Get rid of Brodie and make them take Brouwer too.
Time to retool. They are not making the playoffs.

Trade #1. Ferland to Winnipeg for 1st + Vesalainen
Ferland has high value due to his breakout season, like a Maroon type player but younger. Winnipeg is looking for a physical forward and was said to be showing interest in Patrick Maroon. If Flames can do this trade, they also block the Oilers from getting assets while stocking up.
Trade #2. Stone + Dube + Valimaki + Hathaway to Ottawa for Hoffman + Oduya
Stone has a great contract and can be reunited with his bro, similar what Toronto did with Philly years back with Luke Schenn. Ottawa will likely also want some future guys as well for giving up the skill and contract of Hoffman so Flames will have to part with some of their younger prospects. In turn Flames will need to get an NHL dman so getting Oduya as he is an upcoming UFA could make sense.
Trade #3a. Brodie to TB for 1st + Taylor Raddysh + Boris Katchouk
Trade #3b. Brodie to Dallas for 2nd + Miro Heiskanen + Denis Gurianov
Trade #3c. Brodie to St Louis for 2nd + Robert Thomas/Klim Kostin + Jordan Kyrou
All three teams are looking to bolster their d for a deep playoff run. These three teams already have lots of young talent and strong cores. They can afford to give up future picks and prospects to get an offensive dman in Brodie and put him in their top 4.
Trade #4. Versteeg to anywhere for a 2018/2019 draft pick
Trade #5. Bartowski to anywhere for a 2018/2019 draft pick
I still believe Flames can still stay competitive but gain assets for the future. But it's also time to give NHL development time to some of the farm guys. I feel Kulak is playing with more confidence and will still make the odd mistake but if he's sharing time with Oduya, it will only benefit him for the future.
Johnny - Monahan - Hoffman (new RW)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Lazar (looked real good in preseason together)
Klimchuk - Stajan - Brouwer
Giordano - Dougie
Kulak/Oduya - Hamonic
Oduya/Kulak - Andersson
Extras: Lomberg/Wotherspoon

Brodie to Isles for De Haan (basically his rights due to injury) + CGY 1st + 2nd + Ho-Sang. This is assuming we decide to be sellers.

NO NO NO!!!!
Hoffman is good, but not good enough to move that many pieces. Especially Dube and Valimaki.

I can only speak for myself, but I'd love to watch a team that doesn't seem committed to fluctuating between bad and average, just like they have for the last 30 years.

Mental weakness was a concern for the young guns era flames as well including one Mr. Iginla. It wasn't till Darryl Sutter showed up that the intestinal and mental fortitude became a strength of the team.
My point is, a coach who exudes leadership and confidence is what is missing. As much as I did not like Hartley's kitty bar the door defence, you can't argue his teams had a swagger and confidence to it.
Flames had a leader and General in Hartley but not the tactician. They have the tactician in GG, but not the leader. Flames need a coach who does both or at least has the confidence to hire assistants who can actually help where he is weak and are not completely useless.

So after getting some good young pieces and putting ourselves in a position to compete for the playoffs your answer to not losing is to rebuild? Guess what that will lead to a lot more losing and if you think that will automatically lead to future winning teams just ask the fans of Arizona, Florida, and even those knobs up North how that has panned out.

Okay. So we're trading all our roster players for draft picks. Who fills these spots? Prospects? How long do we wait until they develop into legit NHLers? And by that time is Gaudreau and Monahan still in their primes?
I understand people are frustrated but selling for picks would be an awful move right now.

So trading Ferland, Brodie, Hathaway, and Stone means we are rebuilding? And moving those guys does not necessarily mean we will keep losing especially if we are adding Hoffman and Oduya who are both NHL players. New faces and a shakeup while getting future assets while we still have most of our core in place. Help me understand how that is the same as those teams you listed?

Selling non core players while their stock is higher for prospects or picks is awful? We need some changes because no way in hell this current roster will ever compete for the cup.

Who replaces those players? Are the Flames better off because of it?
