To me this movie just seems a lot like the Star Trek reboots. They've got a young actor taking over for an iconic actor in an iconic role. In other words, Solo seems like more of a full on reboot/re-imagining than a continuation of the existing universe.
The initial Star Trek reboot movie was actually pretty solid. It also benefited from being ahead of the curve on many of the visual effects techniques, that have now become far less exciting. When Star Trek began to put out more generic plots, the audience disappeared. That's a big part of what's happened with Solo.

the new Star Trek movies had way more potential freedom than Solo, since it's a parallel universe. the two big mistakes they made were too much time between films (4 years) to keep momentum, and hauling out a dumb story about KHAAAAAAAAN with movie #2. if Star Trek Beyond was the 2nd movie and came out in 2011, it would have made way more cash and the franchise would be on more solid footing.
Haven't seen it yet (plan on seeing it at some point though, have to see Deadpool 2 first ) but think this was was kind of set up to fail.
Trailers never really sold it. Disney released it way to close to Avengers, and to a lesser extent Deadpool 2. The hardcore fan base had a sour taste in their mouth still due to their complaints with TLJ. And in the end people never really wanted to see a young Hans Solo.
I kind of think they should have taken the Rogue One approach. Focus on either new characters, or characters that had smaller roles in the past.
Honestly think they would have been way better off from a marketing perspective if they made this a Lando movie, with Donald Glover as the lead. Make the story about the Falcon and Lando's background, then maybe you end that movie with a young Harrison Ford as Hans Solo cameo making a bet to win the Falcon from Lando or meeting him for the first time.

My son and I saw it and both thought it was awesome! We both believe that this can and will have at least one sequel.
I thought for sure we’d meet Maz but that must come later.
The ending sure points to a sequel and the big job for Jabba. They could have him go after Qi’ra in a sequel of its own or in the Jabba movie. In fact I think the best way to do the Boba movie is to tie it into this storyline.

Is anyone going to make a spoilers thread? I haven't seen it but I will soon and I want to discuss.
Honestly I don't think it's a big enough movie for two separate threads and there's only one thing in the movie that I would consider a pretty big spoiler, and that's been spoiler tagged everywhere.

I thought the 3rd Star Trek movie was pretty pointless. Just a bunch of running around. It had all the cutesy stuff of the first reboot film (quips, gadgets, lens flare, unlikely fight victories) but none of the substance or intelligence.
The Star Trek fanbase is basically a nit-pickier version of the Star Wars fanbase. I can see why the film didn't resonate with them.

it was fun but my main gripe is it's the 3rd (4th if you count Nemesis) movie in a row where the Enterprise gets completely owned by a bigger badder foe. like is this stupid ship state of the art or what? why does it keep getting taken apart like it was made of paper mache?

as much trouble as they have getting people to care about the current Solo movie, you'd probably see half empty theaters on opening weekend if the next one was just about a failed smuggling run that ends with him buying a drink at Mos Eisley.

So far, this week anyways, Solo is not showing legs. It's Wednesday drop off was bigger than most movies, suggesting a 2.0 or less multiplier. This movie could come in at less than 200 mil domestic and 400 mil worldwide, which would translate into a loss of $200 mil plus.
There's no way the studio is doubling down on Solo. If anything they're likely to cancel several already planned projects.
They need to start asking themselves "If we need to force in appearances and references to the original movies into this to get people excited, why are we making it?"
Are they just going to keep pulling on threads of the old films or are they going to make good stories just set there?. Rogue One was a movement in the right direction imo. Clearly totally entwined with the Death Star, but a separate story. They chickened out I think.

The Enterprise always seems to kind of suck in the movies, even the old ones. Crippled in 2, destroyed in 3, not in 4, commandeered in 5, nearly destroyed in 6, destroyed in 7, commandeered in 8, almost destroyed in 10. I would love a movie where the Enterprise was awesome, the best ship that nobody messed with. Then you have to write an intelligent story instead of a big baddies story.

Remember that Scotty complained that the Enterprise was pretty much built by Monkey's in Star Trek 5 so the ship barely worked.
I could buy what happened to the Enterprise in 2 (Their shields are down . . . of course we are one big happy fleet). And in 6 (A Bird of Prey that can fire while cloacked). Even with the shield frequencies in 7, they seemed to over emphasize how fragile the Galaxy Class ship was. Then in Nemisis they went way over the top with how powerful what's his face's ship was. Oh yeah they have like 1000 phasers and photon Torpedo Tubes.
At some point, the Enterprise which was written to almost be the living embodiment of a family member, went to being the weak family member wearing leg braces.
And by the way, the guy that decided that the whole saucer seperation was a way cool idea needs to be shot into the sun.

Well Rian Johnson has a Star Wars trilogy to make that will have new characters and a new location.
The movies to be planned by DB Weiss and Benioff are supposed to be separate from the trilogies as well.

They could make it be a reboot of smokey and the bandit in space. I mean they alluded to it in Empire Strikes back.
But you could do a sequel around Han Solo with some zany ship collisions and the whole Imperial Fleet trying to catch him
Lets see
Hans Solo = Bandit
Some hot girl that haggles a ride with Bandit errr Solo
Another Smuggler as Cledus flying a super hot escort fighter with a huge bird on the front of it
Chewie = Cldus' dog
Various choked out Imperial Admirals as Junior Justice
Lando as Big Enos, trying to prevent Solo from completing the challenge
All you'd need to do is throw in a challenge that Solo has to smuggle some spice across the galaxy in a certain amount of time. modify the Smokey and the Bandit theme song
And the money would roll in

It's hard to tell at this point if the disappointing box office is because Solo isn't a good movie, or because the Last Jedi poisoned the well. I know I came away from TLJ with the same attitude I came away from the second Hobbit movie: I'm out.
I'll watch Solo at some point in the next couple weeks, as I quite liked Rogue One and find the idea of standalone Star Wars movies more appealing than endless rehashes of the original trilogy. But we might be seeing more proof that a single bad movie (TLJ) can poison a franchise, even one as big as Star Wars.
I guess we'll find out when Episode IX opens.
