Got to thinking today I wonder if Buffalo would have any interest in Jon Gillies? With the emergence of David Rittich and Tyler Parsons knocking at the door I could really see him being a big part of a trade that brings Evander Kane to Calgary.Buffalo really doesn't have any up and coming goalie prospects do they?If we could add a guy like Kane for Gillies and say one of our D prospects along with say a 2nd round pick I think it may be enough to interest the Sabres.I really like the idea of adding a guy like Kane who is only 26 and seems to be just coming into his own.Sure he has made some poor decisions in the past but what kid hasn't between the age of 18-25?I really think he has matured and learned from those mistakes. He is an incredible skater and has a physical element to his game that would fit in perfect with our group. What do you guys think?

Flames do not have a 2nd until 2021 if they make the playoffs this year and can’t afford to move another one.
Gillies, Kylington for Kane if he signs a 3-5 year deal at 4-5M per

Kane isn't taking a pay cut after having a career year. He makes $5.25 million right now.

That is why I don’t want him. He got paid last contract because he was a former 4th overall pick trending in the right direction. Over the course of the 6 year contract he got ran out of Winnipeg with his teammates gladly waving goodbye, was investigated for sexual assault and put up rather mediocre numbers. Don’t see how one good year when he needs it is going to earn him a raise but it probably will.

Wait, we don't have a second for the next three drafts? I didn't know that, wow.

Kind of crazy after Darryl Sutter traded all but two of his 2nd round picks over eight seasons that the team has fallen back on old habits. It didn't work out for Darryl and I'm not sure if it's going to work out for Treliving at this rate if he keeps trading picks like he has the past few seasons. It's one thing to be moving those picks if you are a team that is on the cusp of winning a cup or winning cups and trying to win more but this team isn't there yet and I'm not sure there's enough depth in the organization to keep chasing playoff spots instead of cups.

Well if the Flames miss the playoffs this year they only give the Coyotes a 3rd in the Smith deal but if they make it that becomes a 2nd in addition to the 2 2nds movednin the Hamonic deal

Kane put on an event for 50 local kids. This type of stuff, and with how he's dealt with the media this year - the guy looks to be trying to improve the perception people have of him. Good to see, but not easily done (...as this thread shows).

Well if prevents him from using 2nds on players like Mason McDonald and Hunter Smith maybe it’s not a bad thing.
We have a legit prospect pool now. Yes, we need to keep the pipeline coming but under sutter our pool was weak while we traded away picks. I’m not overly worried about losing 2nds as we seem to be hitting on our 1sts unlike the sutter regime and we’ve been drafting well in later rounds as well as gaining prospects in NCAA free agent market.

The guy is all in on the next payday doing everything he can. I cant see how he doesn’t hit the market July 1. It would be a pure rental

It's a little early on with some of these drafts to say we're drafting well. Fans were excited about the potential of Sutter's picks at the time, but look how that turned out. The book hasn't been written on the last 3-4 drafts, the Flames could strike out as easily as they can hit a home run(s). Personally, I'm not holding my breath that any of these guys become impact players. The odds are just not in their favor as much as I like Valikmaki, Parsons, Andersson and a few others. We needed more bullets in the chamber, not less. I can't think of a single team that was successful trading away picks like we have (unless they were already contenders).
I think our prospect pool is average at best now that Jankowski has graduated. Look around the league, we don't have anything special compared to other teams. Even our best prospect (IMO) is blocked for the foreseeable future because we needed to have Stone AND Hamonic. Our putrid pick situation leads me to believe that this will only get worse. NCAA free agents are nice, but are probably the equivalent to a 5th-7th round pick for how often they work out.
I really hope this team turns into a contender with the group we have because there will be very little coming over the next few years to augment the core. Better hope some of Valimaki, Parsons, Dube, Andersson and Kylington pan out or we get lucky on late round picks. Personally I think Treliving, for as much as he is the best GM since Fletcher, blew it by paying so much for Hamonic. I think he's a decent #4 but the acquisition cost was a little hefty for my liking.

Let’s not talk about McDonald and Smith without mentioning Anderson, Kylington, Parsons, and Dube 4 of the teams top prospects drafted in the 2nd round by Treliving.
I am ok with moving the 2nds as well because Treliving’s drafted in the second round 6 times from 14-16. The Lazar gamble looks bad right now, the Hamonic trade seems like an overpayment and we hope the condition is met on the Smith trade because that means the Flames are in the playoffs and the first sent to the islanders is out of the lottery.
I am also confident Treliving can recoup a 2nd or 2 over the next couple of drafts.

Evander Kane has not really improved since he signed his 6 year extension. He obviously has had a good summer and was motivated to have a strong year knowing he is going to be a free agent this summer
Does that explanation make it a little less odd?
I am far from convinced that Kane would consider a team friendly re-sign contract if Calgary trade for him. He is 26 and this is his best opportunity for a payday and teams will line up. I think if Calgary trade for him I can’t see how they can re-sign him, Backlund this summer and extend Tkachuk, Ferland, Bennett and get a new starting goalie the next summer.

Kane for Gillies + a conditional 10 1st round picks if he re signs and does not test free agency.... There is 100% chance he is going to test free agency and as bright as things looked for Gillies, the way things are headed, we won't receive anything for him anyway or have him make the big team.

Seriously don't understand the interest in this guy. Let's say he goes to free agency this summer. What kind of $ and term would you be comfortable with, if he signed here. I'd be fine with 1 year and that's it, $'s don't matter so much.
As far as rentals go. He'll cost at least a 1st and a 2nd. Okay well we have neither and even if we did, why would we waste them on a streaky guy with attitude problems. Can he displace one of Ferland or Frolik? I don't think so.
The only role I can see him helping us with is playing point on the pp. But, realistically the whole pp strategy should be reworked to better utilize our current talent.

Not really pal. He is trying to change his perception and I am not buying it. Not hard to comprehend and quite far from “mental gymnastics” as you describe it.
Kane is too risky of a move for Calgary and I don’t think they should make it. Is that an agenda?
