Basically, if you were going up to the podium on draft day in the 2nd round and you knew that the guy on the board would have 36 points in his first 176 games, would you still take him even if his junior stats were good?
Not the end of the world I just don't like the trade.

the two best 2nd rounders of all time...GTFO

Im going to predict he plays on a line one day with bennett and tkachuk and they will be good. Watching him in junior reminds me of those two

The more polak is going all hyperbole, the more I like it. Almost worth the 2nd alone, Lazar is now just a bonus.

Some guys take developing - and end up in the wrong spot to mature for a while. When they get to a place where someone takes time and effort with them, they can bloom. His work in his earlier years looks pretty good, but he was with a relatively crappy Ottawa team, and lost momentum. Jokki was a freebie anyway (waivers) and the Flames got potential and another kid. What's not to like about him coming here?
Wow. Tough crowd.

there were plenty here that thought backlund was a bust after 3 years too

How am I going Hyperbole?
Cause I don't like the trade and would rather keep the pick or spend it on something else?

Yeah and that post had two random bad picks we made. Decent players get drafted in the 2nd all of the time. It's a pretty valuable pick. Better players were had for less and I'm sure better players will be drafted in the 2nd than Lazar.

I don't think so.
Majority of the other trades involved UFA's, so obviously their value would be a lot lower. Getting a young cost controlled player with upside is gonna cost more than a UFA.
For this trade to go through, the flames scouts pretty much had to say that there isn't anybody in the 2nd round this year that they feel could contribute to the team more than Lazar in our desired time frame.
I feel like if Lazar can anchor our 3rd line RW going forward, it would turn out to be a good trade for us.
Edit. Lazar hasn't done anything in the league that warrants him being slotted ahead of Brouwer, or even Chiasson. I think he'll have a hard time breaking into the line up for the remainder of the season.

Sure, most 2nds don't pan out, which is why you need lots of them - they're lottery tickets.
|
Obviously juniors stats can be deceiving, but 41 goals in 58 games doesn't suggest destined for bottom six. Of course Ferland was posting 47 goals around the same time, and look at him now.

Poll pretty much perfectly sums it up. Nobody loves it, nobody hates it. In the world of NHL trades, how often does that happen? Imagine the poll if it was Burrows in place of Lazar? There'd be a hell of a lot more hate.

9 2nd round picks since 2011 and 2 picks per year the last 3 drafts. I feel this is a pick the Flames could afford to lose. I see this as a reverse Sven trade. We moved a highly touted first rounder that couldn't stick with our team for a 2nd in a deep draft. We now give a 2nd and a depth D for a former highly touted first rounder at the exact same time
Sven drafted in 11 traded nearly 4 years later in 15
Lazar drafted in 13 traded nearly 4 years later in 17

That's probably how I would have it to start as well. Give him some skilled line mates to start off.
Chiasson can rotate with Bouma I guess.
