Just to add to this Whale's post, I also hate it when people say that a guy like Daniel Tkaczuk was a bust. I thought the kid was looking great and was on his way to becoming a hugely important piece for the Flames - probably 'future captain' material too - until a concussion put all of that to a stop. Daniel was not a bust - he was a player that had his NHL dreams cut short due to a concussion.

Anyone who thought he was going to be the next Mario didn't understand what Mario was and all the amazing physical attributes he possessed.
Daigle shared very little with him as a player. Almost nothing.
So any comparison was a poor one.
I maintain that was not the prevailing opinion.
I think a projection that he could be a Lafontaine was bang on. Obviously fell well short, but that was a more reasonable description of his ceiling based on the type of player and overall talent level.

I don't remember the Mario comparisons, but the hype was off the charts insane at the time. In my time of following the draft I can only think of a handful of players more hyped than Daigle. Lindros, Crosby, McDavid and maybe Ovechkin. He was absolutely expected to become a huge star and be one of the faces of the NHL, there was never a doubt about it. In the end, he had the brain, the skating and the playmaking but no one could motivate him to work for it or go to the tough areas. Always going through the motions, and dreaming of an acting career, he squandered his gifts because he was too lazy and indifferent. He could've been in the Yzerman/Sakic tier had he possessed the drive of those superstars IMO.

Daigle did have franchise player/generational talent hype around him for sure but he was not a big guy so I don't understand how anyone could say he would be the next Lemieux.

Probably because he was French.

Because he was French and because he was a scoring phenom. Daigle averaged 2.6 PPG in his draft year.

Daigle's biggest issue was that he wasn't inspired. He left the game for a while to try and pursue an acting career, then came back when that didn't work.
Maybe it's because it came so easy to him in junior and then he didn't know how to try harder or it was just too much work. Either way, he didn't seem to love hockey as much as most players with his potential.

Well, I know a line somewhere around here that could use a RW not named Chiasson ...

Yak backchecked like a demon, last night...the message has been sent by Hitch, and, apparently, received by Yak, that in St. Loo, defense matters, unlike the no good place, where he played previously...

My impression of him has always been that he backchecks like a demon. Problem is, he doesn't know what to do when he gets back there.

Ha, so many times I've seen Yak bust his butt on the backcheck just to cruise into the corner. Effort has never really been his problem.

Each, and every, one of those commas was properly used, grammatically!
Seriously, the pre-game show on the Nashville feed, touched on why Yak seems out of favor in St. Loo...they surmised it was that he doesn't fit into Hitch's "structured" system, being too free-wheeling a dangler, by instinct.
