Their fate is in Weber's hands now and before, it's his retirement that triggers this.

There are also opportunities to make cap-management trades.
However, they no longer have those options. And Montreal has zero motivation to be concerned about the recapture penalties.

Nashville really doesn't either though. They don't actually pay that money and they're not a cap team.

How many North American born players have actually retired and trigger a recapture penalty? If they get injured they go LITR ala Pronger who is still on the Coyotes roster or they end getting bought out. They have no incentive to retire and forfeit money, where as the Euros (Kovy and Datsuyk) have to "retire" to nullify their NHL contract so they can play is Russia

What would happen with recapture in the event of a buyout? Weber makes 1M per for the last 3 years of his contract.

Well if he doesn't retire it's even worse for Montreal.

I'm surprised they even have the option. Subban's new contract hasn't kicked in yet, he's never waived his NMC. If that the way it works?

If Weber retires when his 1M years kick in that would be over 8M/year for 3 years, that would put them over the cap today.

MTL also has way less motivation than NSH to buy out the contract if another compliance window opens up.

There haven't really been many contracts with potential recapture penalties on them that have reached the low salary years yet, so it's difficult to predict what will happen in the future.

Bergevin's not done, you guys. Next up: Carey Price for Henrik Lundqvist. Straight up.

Buyout wouldn't change the recapture at all from my understanding. NSH would be on the hook for a crapload and MTL for a little bit.

Yup. They get in trouble if he retires at 39 or 40. They have no control on him doing that in Montreal and they have no control on him doing that if he still played in Nashville.

There would be no recapture (good for Nashville), but there would be big cap hits incurred by the Habs (bad for Montreal) for doing so. So, don't expect the Habs to do the Preds that favour, although, they could trade the contract and let someone else do it for them.

I don't think that is true, the recapture goes to the team that received the cap benefit regardless unless I'm badly mistaken.

With a buyout, you're still taking on the cap hit remaining on the contract (minus the 1/3 of salary you're not paying), so there is no other benefit to be recaptured.

So Habs just trade him back to Nashville and they can pay him 1M not to play, if necessary

I say it's a huge win for Montreal. Weber will bring defensive consistency and physicality PK never provided while still being a premier point producer from the backend. The Habs also save a small amount against the cap and actual dollars.
