Interesting article on the arbitration process in baseball.
http://itmightbedangerous.blogspot.c...n-players.html
I was looking into Colabello's contract status for next year. Essentially good news for the Jays, not so much for Colabello. Essentially the Jays can pay him whatever they want assuming it's at least league minimum or not less than 80% of his prior year salary. Jays will have a pretty good player next year for a discount price tag (assuming the rules haven't changed since 2009). Good to know he's back though. I wasn't sure on his pre-arbitration status.

I'm with TAO here. The Jays do seem to do this same stuff every year. I don't see how Greinke would sign here. He's a Dodger forever I think, and he just opted out so he could get more money.
As for the Jays, it looks like they're taking a PRINCE2 approach to budgeting by saying the granted budget is $145M or whatever, but there's more money in the pot if they're in contention around X date. Regardless of the amount, it's a perfectly fair approach if they have a good amount available for acquiring talent at the deadline.

I just can't see how it's possible the Jays can add at the deadline. They played all their cards of value this year. They need to add during free agency if they plan on adding in my opinion.
This is the same team in the field that was 2 wins from winning the World Series ( would have rolled NYM like Kansas did). The team that beat them will be much weaker next year too ( losing Zobrist, Cueto, and Gordon at a minimum). If they don't go for it again, they are going to face backlash like never before. All those new fans they picked up, are expecting big things.

I can't see them dealing any notable prospects either - from the organization being a bit shallow in that department but also in Shapiro's philosophy. Where they can get that type of player is through trade by taking on salary.

With Shapiro now in the fold, would it be interesting to look at a re-habbing arm that took a payout of 12.5M this season? Buy low.
Cliff Lee, anyone?

Definitely worth a look if the money is right. At 37 Cliff Lee is big risk/big reward type of territory. A team looking to win the division next year can't roll the dice on starting pitching. I'm not familiar what his rehab situation is or what type of money he'd be looking for, but I wouldn't want hand Cliff Lee 10M and bank the Jays hopes on him. If he'd accept 4-5 M and a 5th rotation spot to start the season i'd be all over that. Doubt he would though.

The only deal I would offer Lee would be the same deal they gave Johan Santana last year... Minor League deal with an incentive heavy major league portion. Which I would happily offer him. There is a very real chance that Lee's arm just doesn't have anything left... he hasn't pitched in a year and a half and the last half year he pitched saw an across the board drop in velocity. So long as the risk is completely mitigated I'd try Lee out but I wouldn't guarentee anything.
Really the Jays have such an overpowering offense that I'd be satisfied if they just got an inning-eating mid-tier guy (basically a less expensive Buehrle).

Do you remember what the Jays gave Santana? I had high hopes for him, but it never panned out.

Does Lee want to move his family to Toronto for a year on a maybe deal?
Maybe he moves up and leaves them in Philly but I know family is very important to him especially with his daughters health issues.

With the Braves giving away Simmonds today to the Angels, I wonder if there are any guys on their roster that could be decent buy low candidates.

I wouldn't mind Shelby Miller or Julio Teheran in a Jays uniform. Though they are both pretty young, so I bet the Braves won't include them as part of their fire sale in an effort to keep them around for when their new stadium opens.
I still can't believe these guys are getting a new stadium already.

Nothing finalized, but lots of buzz #Bluejays, Estrada nearing 2-yr deal in $24M-$29M range. Would mean not taking $15.8M qualifying offer

2.50M base MLB salary (If called up), 2.05M in games started bonuses (maxing out at 25 GS), and 2M in days on roster bonuses. $6.55 million total.

Wow, only two years would be a windfall for the Jays.

That's pretty much perfect if it's in the 13-14 per range.
No complaints in having him back.
Stroman
Empty spot
Estrada
Dickey
Hutchison/converted reliever

With the hiring of LaCava, keeping of Gibbons and also signing Estrada?
That would be a good start for Shipiro.

Great term and dollar value for Estrada, surprised he didn't chase the money elsewhere.

Hopefully Estrada can be as effective without Navarro calling his game for him. If he can, it'll be great to bring him back.
Still need to sign another solid starter, at the very least.

I think the market for Navarro is next to zero unless a team wants a DH. I actually think he'll be back as the Jays backup catcher

With the Jays extending a qualifying offer, they basically screwed him from going elsewhere. Nobody would have given up a high draft pick plus 30+ million over 3 seasons to sign him when others are on the market that aren't as big a risk.
Likely would have been one of those guys that signed in July after the compensation window closed.
