My theory - the arena announcement is a ruse, they are sneaking out in the middle of the night to move to Albequerque.
Fixed that for you.

They're moving the team to Albequerque!??

I would think part of the extra costs would be making it expandable to 40k and the space/design/options to be able to upgrade seating capacity over time. Say even if the city throws in 200m whose to say the Flames SEG wouldn't add 100-150m to it as well give that it is for the Stamps as the primary tenant.

My invite says Archie Boyce theatre. I went to a Bettman Q&A there once, not a big room.

The STH events are at the Archie Boyce theatre on the grounds. I think the one at the dome is the 2:30 media event.

edit: looked it up and the seating capacity is 500 according to the web

If eventually approved for the downtown west end, construction of the proposed CalgaryNEXT development likely won’t start for another three years, said a source familiar with the project.

And it will include commercial and residential components along with a new arena for the Calgary Flames and a stadium-fieldhouse which will be shared by the Calgary Stampeders and the public.

“I would liken it to Lansdowne Park in Ottawa,” said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“It will be a sports and entertainment area.

“It would be similar to East Village but certainly not as dense ... you would have hotels and highrises and some office buildings and complexes and all that in the scenario.

“The whole concept is it will incorporate that whole area.”

Are they converting the team to the Arena Football league? That being mentioned, I wonder if Arena Football would fly in Calgary? (said no one...)

Well if construction isn't slated to even begin for another 3 years then Councilor Meningitis or whatever his name is can put one of Muta's blown off socks in his mouth since the Saddledome will DEFINITELY be out of date and by far and away the oldest arena in the league by the time it's finished.

When the Storm folded, they had already moved from the PDL up to the A-League. My points remains that the PDL provides a level where it is much easier to establish financial stability and a foundation upon which a club can be built.

I wonder if it would be easier to work it backwards. I.e.: The Flames group starts by owning a pro MLS team, and accepts losses for a while until the brand and culture get built up. Once you have your MLS team, you create your own affiliate/academy, and start profiting off that as well. Not unlike MLSE.

The Canadian Tire Centre was built in just over 18 months (one advantage of building in the middle of nowhere).

Three years will give them lots of time to make the deals and have the car dealers and Greyhound station move out. Then, they can break ground in spring/summer of 2018 with puck drop in 2020.

The owners of the oldest MLS franchise in Canada and the only one to have not yet made it to the playoffs?

By starting off as a club rather than purchasing a franchise you grow and expand as you can within your means. If your Academy isn’t producing enough players to field a competitive team in the next league and your club isn’t profitable enough to purchase the necessary players, you make adjustments until your situation allows it. It takes longer but it is safer and sustainable.

The more I read and hear the more I still have a sinking feeling that this project will be very underwhelming. With the price tag, timeline, physical space, contamination cleanup, etc I think it will come out as very basic and bare bones. I bet we get a bland arena along the lines of Columbus or Colorado. The "field house" won't even come close to the caliber of Saskatchewan's or Winnipeg's new stadiums. The reality is we will get new facilities that beat our old ones, but they will not be groundbreaking or worth a second thought. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Calgary back on the map in regards to sporting facilities. Calgary has to start thinking big again.

I was pessimistic that we won't get accurate renderings for the final product but this is another level of debbie downer.

Everything that everyone has said so far points to this being pretty awesome and I seriously doubt it's not at least comparable to Edmontons new rink, which is pretty swanky.

I don't get this field house thing, is it a practice facility or a small stadium? I'm under the impression the stamps need a new stadium more than the flames do.

I'm with The Familia, go big or don't bother at all.

What's wrong with corrugated sheet-metal square buildings?
