Ideally they would be able to come to a deal in the 7-7.5 mil per range over 4-5 years...

Not nearly the worst case scenario imo. Worst is, well, I don't even want to go there. Not likely anyhow.

True, but letting him walk would not happen. The Flames have shown a willingness to deal players even if they can be useful (Glencross), so I doubt the Flames would just let his contract end and not get anything for him.

Not a fan of trading Gio unless salary demands and term get out of hand. What kind of king's ransom are we looking at? It doesn't necessarily have to be Detroit.
How about Gio to Edmonton for their 2016 1st & Eberle? or replace the 1st with Nurse.

Again, we don't know the full details or the other side of the story. So this rumor of a $9 million ask could be the agent just wanting to raise some eyebrows in the media, or for shock value. We really don't know what the situation is, but it's fun to speculate though.
I'd be willing to give Gio a long term contract if the dollars are reasonable. If he wants absolute top dollar, then a 4 year max I would say.
If I was Gio, I'd be willing to take less dollars for more term. Realistically, what are the chances of landing a multi year contract at age 37? It rarely happens.

Rich Winter and Brian Burke likely have a strong working relationship, as they are both major players in the Univeristy of Athabasca's hockey MBA program. There is no doubt those two talk on a regular basis, and Winter probably understands Calgary's position better than most agents. That said, he is paid to be Giordano's agent, so there may be some serious middleman going on between Burke/Treliving and Giordano.
I anticipate something gets done, but I sure how Burke and Treliving don't capitulate. I'd say even without Girodano, we have a capable top four defense corps. It wouldn't be hard to find another 5-6 to pair with Engelland, and that's not accounting for a huge return Gio could bring in a trade.

"Don't fall in love with your own players" has been a mantra of thoughtful GMs in pro sports in the moneyball/salary cap era. Giordano has never quite fit into this team's rebuild cycle. He seems like a fantastic leader, and if he stays healthy a likely Norris finalist/winner over the next couple years. But his peak is the next couple years, and then he goes downhill. Realistically, this team iI imagine it is a very tough decision whether to give him a very rich contract or cut bait.
It is also very unlikely they start the season with this unresolved. They need to make the decision now and deal with the loss and start moving on, or sign him long term. As a trade chip he gets a good return right now, but not a great one. We're dealing one year of a top defenceman plus an inside track on signing him. That's likely not a whole lot more than a first from a contending team or a good but not great prospect unless we get lucky.

I think you are selling the potential return short. A backup goalie with 1 year to UFA got 2/3/7. Lucic got 2x1. How much would someone pay for a #1 defenseman? He puts TB over the top? Buys Chicago another Cup for Oduya money? Washington tops in the East with him? And so on.

Gio won't risk starting next season without a new contract. His demands will go down.

He would bring a very good return right now, I think.
Next year's first, good prospect and roster player.

Kind of a weird turn to this thread. The Flames are not trading Gio. They will come to an agreement and my guess is the term is 4-5 years with AAV around 7.5 per.

This is going to be a tough negotiation. It's likely Giordano's last big pay day so he should shoot for the moon, but given his recent injury problems and current age, 9M is way off base for the Flames.
The Hamilton acquisition makes things really interesting.

I bet he ends up signing for 6 years, 7.5-7.75 million AAV.

That's great that you think that, but the reality is he will be leaving a ton of $ on the table compared to UFA if he took that deal.

The alternative might be leaving Calgary. He may end up with a choice to make, I really can't see Treliving giving him term AND a huge AAV. It's one or the other IMO.

At least those ATB commercials would still work with a Gio/Eberle swap.

At 33, not sure he would hit a homerun. 33 year olds don't get 9 mil. Just doesn't happen. Gio/Ritch seem to want backpay for his last 2 elite seasons but it's not gonna happen. He's not going to be a 9 million dollar player in his mid to late 30s.

The difference between now and last week is that last week Gio was an absolute need to keep otherwise we're screwed. Now that we have Hamilton, Gio becomes a player that you would really like to keep under the right circumstances, but could move if there is no way to come to terms and a deal that works is available.
