Honestly I much prefer our chances drafting and developing a player from the 2nd round in a supposed deep draft than trying to trade Sven for another struggling player with untapped potential. These guys may be "further along" development wise but they are also showing that their development isn't going very well. We have an opportunity at a fresh start with a player or we can use the asset in a package deal. Sven was damaged goods.

I guess I always viewed the rebuild as really starting the day we drafted Monahan and everything else was a bonus.
I hate that he's gone, but I'm happy we have:
CGY 1st
CGY 2nd
WSH 2nd
VAN 2nd
CGY 3rd
WSH 3rd
This summer. That's rad.

Sven to me was a guy who could be a 1st liner or who might be playing in the KHL in three years. It was starting to look more like the latter than the former. So, I'm happy that we crystallized an uncertain asset. Especially for a 2nd in a deep draft.
I'm disappointed that Sven didn't work out. There was so much promise early but he seems to have totally stalled after Burke sent him down last year.
I wanted to be able to wish him well, but he's a Canuck now, so that ain't happening. Plus, if he wanted out, then I don't really care.

Now that it has comes out that Baertschi demanded a trade can we all agree he had entitlement issues? I know that is soooo 2013, but it seems to have finally been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. What guy with no body of professional success has the sack to demand a trade? Wow!

Ugh...I don't like this trade at all. Just this past summer, we ranked him our #3 prospect (behind Gaudreau and Bennett). He definitely didn't help himself this year, and others did perform much better than expected, but to lose him for just a 2nd rounder seems bad. I would have laughed this morning if you would have offered us Petry for him straight up...and yet, Petry received more in return! Not a fan at all.
If this was the best that was available, I would have preferred waiting until the off-season to test the waters on a trade market.

I hear you. Hopefully the Flames traded away a NHL fringe player that had great potential but didn't pan out.
Only because he is with Van i dont care if he remains a bust. If it he was traded out East down South i would say good luck Sven.

Now we can trade our 14-16 OA pick with one or more 2nds to move into the top 7-10, and still have some picks before the 4th round.

The Flames got a 2nd for a washed out prospect that couldn't deliver at the NHL level...well done, I'm happy.

Maybe the return could've been a little better, but at the end of the day Sven has to be top 6 to be effective. Where does he fit in the top 6? With Gaudreau, Poirier, Ferland & Granlund ahead of him he wasn't making this team next fall. Better to get a 2nd than lose him to waivers next year.
Also, what's with the Hunter Smith hate? Guy was drafted just last year and has 46 points in 52 games, to go along with +18. He's a project power forward which we are severely lacking in the prospect department. Funny how lots of people are saying we've gave up on Sven too soon but are already writing off Smith.

Baertschi dodges the question when asked if he asked for a trade said they had discussions and were trying to find a solution but in the end it had to be a trade. Doesn't sound like he asked for a trade but him and his agent were moving in that direction.
Opens up more roster spots for next year too I was already wondering if he was going to seize a spot next camp and he would be waiver eligible. Wish we had gotten more though.
