Okay, so he served 12% of a sentence.

No, he served 25% of the maximum sentence (since he got 90 days, not 45). The cases say that the max is reserved for the worst example of the crime, committed by the worst offender (i.e. has a long record).

Here you have a first offender, a victim begging for leniency and who refused to testify if the matter went to trial (at the risk of a contempt conviction), and a resulting "no contest" plea deal.

He's not getting out early. He's in a pay to stay jail, and he's still there.

I laughed at the idea of a pay to stay jail, with better amenities and away from the general incarcerated population for $100 a night.

That's so American, haha. Please tell me Canada doesn't have this?

I feel like he is done in NA. Immigration took him into custody as soon as he was released from his stay-cation sentence. No bond? Does not bode well for him I think.

Weird. You'd think they'd want his $2 million per year in income taxes.

You actually believe his income tax makes any difference at all to U.S border custom officials? Their job is to keep the U.S secure not keep high salary criminals working.

But he already paid his debt to soc... lol couldn't say it with a straight face.

I'm sure if he loses 50k by accident this will all go away. I would not be surprised at all if he ends up staying even though it does look bad for him at the moment. Rich people have a different set of rules than the rest of us, especially in the US.

A veteran immigration lawyer on Voynov: "An individual with crimes like domestic violence is not in great shape in immigration court."

Immigration court is a different ball game IMO. I'm one of the few who believe he should get a 2nd chance but all the signs are pointing to him playing out his days in the KHL. Time will tell how it all goes down but not getting a bond release I feel is a pretty significant sign they have no intention of letting him stay.

I'd be genuinely shocked if a judge didn't take into account his status as a top tier NHL player and let him stay.

In the grand scheme of things, he contributes to the USA economy and isn't a safety concern for the general public. In fact, if the judge was really serious about his wife's safety, he's almost better off keeping them in the USA. I don't think Russia's domestic violence laws are as robust to say the least.

No, professional athletes are able to do whatever they want without consequences.

Was a slightly tongue in cheek comment based on the "If you have money you will likely be spared significant consequence" style of the US justice system.

In my experience (of almost a decade of going through all sorts of hoops to get various US working Visas etc) the IRS and Immigration seem to have very little idea, or interest, about what the other is doing.

Also, the income tax loss is negligible as escrow process ensures the players get half of league revenue and most of the teams are in the states. His salary will be redistributed to everyone else, not withstanding that the kings may opt have to hire someone they wouldn't otherwise have done to fill that roster spot.

True, but if his employer can prove he has a specific skill set the company needs, they will have a strong case. Proving that of course will be very easy to do.

Proving he's valuable to his company is one thing, claiming he contributes to the economy is another.

His wage will go to another player either directly or through escrow so the net benefit in the short run is pretty much zilch. In fact in the long run, paying an American or Canadian player that dough probably benefits the USA more (because they are more likely to spend that money in the states) than paying a Russian who will most likely retire with that cash to his home country and spend it there and in europe.

Does he though? He doesn't bring in any new money, so I don't think he actually does help out.
