If the Flames trade up to 1 and draft Ekblad I am going to be pissed.

Why? Drafting Ekblad at #1 would be fine with me... It addresses a need for the Flames. However, I would now prefer Reinhart over Ekblad too, since we can address the defensive needs in the 2nd/3rd round.

ya, that's a curious statement. i would imagine flames trade up likely targeting ekblad, not to for the right to pick who they want of the 3 forwards, rather than having to pick whoever's left at 4. I say this as it just seems the difference between the 3 forwards potential-wise is not all that large.

If all it took was a 2nd I'd be all over it.
Trading a back-up goalie for a second rounder, and turning that into a first overall pick would be comedic genius.
For some reason I have it in my head it would take more though. Like an established roster player (Backlund) or a high prospect (Baertschi). I wouldn't do it if that's the case.

Yeah, I don't see the reason for trading up if it isn't to get
Ekblad. One of the forwards will fall to us anyways and there probably isn't a lot of difference between them.
I guess we could always take Richie at #1 just to annoy some. Of course an Asst. GM would have to re-enforce the smartness of making that pick by saying someone else was going to take him next if we didn't.

I don't see this NHL draft as being some big mystery. Before the GM's step up to the podium they will have worked every possible angle and collaborated with other GM's in the top 5 draft spots. The closer the draft gets, the more communication happens between the GM's. They want to be on the same page and ensure their desired player is available at that selection and trade up if not.
Similar situation to the Flames trading down to draft their player in Jankowski who they knew would be available later in the round, but had to pick him the 1st round as New Jersey would have selected him beforehand.
In other words, the Flames would only trade for the 1st overall to draft Ekblad if they knew he wouldn't be available in the 3rd or 2nd selection.

I just think drafting a dman at #1 is a poor move when there are some great forwards available. The last 5 D drafted first overall:
EJ
Chris Phillips
Brian Berard
Ed Jovonovski
Roman Hamrlick
All decent NHL careers but no #1 guy there. EJ was uber hyped aqnd was suppoed to be the next big thing but he hasn't stepped up as a #1 guy yet. Even guys like Hedman who were top picks are just starting to come around but even he didn't go #1.
I just think you can get D mid to late 1st who will end up being just as good or better than Ekblad.
Stay at 4 and take one of the "big 3" forwards or draft up and take the F you really like.

Drew Doughty was picked at #2, looked at how he turned out. He didn't go 1st because he was behind Stamkos.

Reinhart/Ekblad could turn into Stamkos/Doughty...who would you rather?

I would love the Flames to pull off a trade to the Panthers for the 1st overall and taking Ekblad.
However I think the asking price will be far to much and ultimately the Flames back off.

I'd prefer the Flames trade up to number 1 to take Reinhart.

Like many I prefer to keep 4oa. If another top pick can be had w/o losing 4oa I would be giddy. In the end I gotta trust the much more qualified Flames staff, but where is the fun in that?
Should we trade up, do we want it to be last minute so as to most mess with the other teams?

Considering this draft isn't expected to deliver anyone of that calibre I would be ecstatic with either.
