Coachella Vs. Governors Ball: The 2015 Lineup War

http://www.stereogum.com/1727819/coa...neup-war/news/

In the past 24 hours, the Coachella and Governors Ball festivals both announced their lineups, which means summer-festival lineup-unveiling season is in full swing. For those of us who dork out way too hard over music — even those of us who don’t intend to hit up any of the festivals in question — this makes for a fascinating time. Last year, I had way too much fun writing about the Coachella poster font sizes and the hierarchies that they reveal. This year, let’s do the same thing, and let’s also look at the differences between the two lineups and what, exactly, they might mean.

There are no ladies anywhere. Among the headlining acts at both festivals, there are exactly zero female musicians, unless we’re counting Jack White’s backing band. Governors Ball, at least, has Lana Del Rey and Björk in semi-headliner positions. Almost all of the Coachella bill is a titanic sausage party. (Big question: Where are Sleater-Kinney? Are they just not playing festivals?) There is no reason for this to still be a thing, but it’s apparently still a thing.

I noticed this at Riot Fest too - no ladies.

I'd take Governor's Ball over Coachella and it's not even close

Ultra Miami phase 1 line up is out!

They added a live stage which looks like it will be aimed at a more diverisified range of EDM. Nice to see as a lot of people (myself included) are getting bored of the generic big room house that dominates these EDM Festivals lately.

Kygo, Galantis, Keisza, Robin Schulz, Odesza, Roykskopp, Clean Bandit, Rac, and all of your run of the mill, big name house guys?

Yeah. I guess they must be contractually obligated to use the artists logo?

I agree though. Overkill.

IMO a bit of a weak year for headliners at these events.

The line up isn't too bad overall if you look at the undercard.

Plus it's just Phase 1. It's Ultra Miami so I'm assuming every big DJ will be there. I'm only considering going cause of the Live stage acts... If they add Flume I'm buying a ticket.

Are you going to Ultra this year, Polak?

I am going to EDCLV again this June, but id love to go to Ultra sometime in the next few years.

Galantis was an artist I was really hoping to see at EDCLV last year, hopefully they are there this year, but that's awesome that they are playing at Ultra.

I didn't plan on it and I think it's too close datewise for me to swing it financially but I would've loved to with the addition of those "live" acts.

I think I'm going to try and go to EDC LV this year now that I'm skipping Coachella. I hope Kygo, Odesza, Royskopp, Galantis and RAC all go to EDC too cause those are some acts I've never had a chance to see.

Yup. I hate when DJ's call themselves "Live". Unless you're playing each instrument in the track, its not live. I don't care if you're fading stems of your songs in and out, it's still not live.

Deadmau5 is the worst for it. He's the one in the picture.

I'm glad everyone is finally seeing the light. As someone who has been a fan of dance music since the early 90s, Americanized big room ''EDM'' is the worst thing to happen to dance music and is a phase I can't wait to fade out.

Spoiler!

Like dirty house, electro-house, dubstep and now big room, it will come crashing down and all those artists with that cookie cutter sound who wanted to cash in so bad will slowly fade away. Thank god.

Ultra is cool and all and every fan of dance music should experience it at least once. But you don't go to Miami in March for Ultra only. The best parties are found in the clubs and other venues around the city during that time. Flying to Miami and simply going to Ultra and then leaving is a waste of a trip. Ultra is simply the icing on the cake. Most of those artists at Ultra will be playing at other club and venues that week, IMO that's when you will really get to hear the good stuff.

Yup. I agree completely. I won't lie though, I'm not much of a music snob. I still like a bit of big room and I used to REALLY like it, just like I used to really like electro-house and dirty house and just like I'm sure I'll like whatever comes next. It's just time for Big Room to start fading away as everything sounds the same now.

My parents have been listening to dance music since I was born so I've been around it my whole life and I've seen all the phases (Happy Hardcore being the most ridiculous in my eyes). I loved many of them. I'm excited to see what's next. What the Kygo's, Odesza's, Flume's and Robin Schulz's can bring to the table.

I'm also excited to see what the main-stay's of EDM can come up with and how they evolve. Tiesto, David Guetta, the SHM guys, ATB, Armin Van Buuren, the guys that have been around forever seem to always change their sound (some might say it's selling out) to match the evolving scene. Which one of them will continue to succeed and who will fall out of relevance to most (Paul Van Dyk anyone?)

Yeah, I stopped by the main stage when Deadmau5 was playing at Sziget and just had a giant "WTF is this?" moment, strictly because it was just a dude with a giant mouse head fiddling with a laptop. Then I headed over and caught Bloody Beetroots and promptly rocked the hell out.
