I am pretty sure that only Colombus has any extra picks in the 1st round of the draft right now.

But then who do you play with JBo? Don't really want to break up the Brodie/Wideman pairing, they've been good, so that leaves Butler, Smith, or Babchuk ... shudder.
I think the best idea to trade Giordano would be next year if Breen or Ramage show they can be legit NHLers. Or (extremely long shot) of Seiloff or Wotherspoon making the team.

I think we may have forgotten about Nicklas Backstrom. Same price range as O'Reilly and just two years older....or three. Worth a First round pick? Washington seems to be a sinking ship and if they think they can pick up a Barkov or Lindholm to go with Markus Johansson he might be made available. they could ride out Ribiero and Johansson until the end of the season.
I would wager a guess that he could be had for a goalie like Kipper or a solid D man like Gio or a package of lesser players. I am not sold that Washington can pull themselves out of the basement this year. Oohh, Alzner is RFA after this season too!

I would say Wotherspoon is more likely than any other D prospect we have to make the Big Club next year. Completely speculative of course but he has the size and is really the most steady D man we have in the system.

Would love to pick up Alzner and Backstrom. Wonder what it takes to get it done. Bouw and Backlund?

I don't see Backstrom going for Kipper that is the type of deal where the Flames will have to include their 1st + +

We are not getting a 100 point player for a 1st round pick or having them throw in alzner and we add backlund.

People really think the Caps will trade their franchise #1 center?
Can't see that happening.

I know this is a very common discussion and for a few seasons the Flames have tried to make the playoffs without trading people but we are only 6 points behind Vancouver with a game in hand... I agree some of our players are under performing but we are playing very weak backup goalies and still getting along just as well as the "great" Oilers.

I guess we've just seen this movie before....and multiple sequels. We know how this all ends and are tired of it.

Fair enough, And most times I would agree, but there are rumors of Ovechkin being traded. Yeah ridiculous I know, but as it looks from the outside WSH is just as much a big stinky pile of mess as the Flames are. I am sure all options are being considered.

I could honestly see Ovechkin being moved before Backstrom. Elite franchise centers should be (and are) more highly regarded than elite franchise wingers.....especially when that franchise winger is massively underperforming his huge $9.5 million cap hit.
If Backstrom were available, and Feaster was able to get him I would dance....and dance, and dance, and dance.

My point was, they are more likley to be a top five drafting team this year and could replace Backstrom with any one of those centers. And in a likely hood that washington decides that a complete restructuring of their team is in order he could be available. Again I am inclined to agree with you on the franchise center issue but something tells me they're more likely to blow it up now than any other team. That much talent and zero success doesnt sit well anywhere.

Throw in Iginla with us eating 50% of cap/salary, Sven, our 1st, Kipper with us eating 50%, Brodie, a top porspect and us eating 50% of Bouw's salary/hit and they might listen.

I could see it happening although I agree it is unlikely, but can't see anyway it happens with Calgary. We don't have close to enough to give up for what they would want.
If someone wanted to move a top young guy in a one for one I could see them looking at that depending on what they feel his role in the team's issues on/off ice.

They won't trade Backstrom until the draft at the earliest then and know they are getting one of those centers.

The caps won't trade Backstrom. They might be in a bad situation right now, but they are in the opposite situation we are. We have a lot of supporting players and they have a lot of stars. Backstrom on any team becomes one of that teams best players instantly. Most of our guys would be traded to a team that's seeking depth.
I really don't see the caps "blowing it up" because they just need a good supporting cast and some help on the back end. The Flames need help. A team like that should have interest in JayBow or maybe Gio..Jio....Jojo....or whatever the heck he's calling himself. I think the loss of Wideman is really hurting them right now and if they made some depth moves they would be back in the swing of things.
I really think the Flames are full of "supporting players" right now, teams would consider any of our players as help to their team, not a player that's going to lead their team. Feaster should start looking at teams like the caps and offering them a support player to help that team get back in it.

I'm all for acquiring draft picks versus moving them out, but I don't think it's that easy getting a top 10 pick. I can see acquiring 2 or 3 extra 1st and/or 2nd round picks, but don't see any top 10 coming our way. You have to keep a few decent vets.

I'd like to see the Flames trade Iggy or Bouw for a 1st rounder + and then at the draft package up their first and the traded for first and trade up into the top ten or even top five. I don't know what teams to target for this but it'd be nice to see the Flames move up in draft order for once rather than down.
