Just wanted to throw in an additional congratulations PMM! I am always keen to get your take on most Flames/Heat issues and I couldn't be happier for you!
Good luck and all the best, hope it's everything you want it to be!

Here's some interesting notes (mostly provided by Dan Kinvig's article):
- The Heat have six players with more than 320 pro games played. The kicker is that they're only allowed five players to be dressed for the game. That means one of Laing, Kolanos, Walter, Piskula, McCarthy, or Callahan will have to sit the first game out.
- Ward is unsure about who will be the starting goaltender tomorrow.
- The Heat will go without a captain for three weeks. In the meantime, Laing, Piskula, and another unnamed experienced player will be assistant captains.
- The Heat are 2-4 against Peoria at home, getting outscored 19 to 10 in those games.

It seems likely that they'll rotate the five "veteran" spots between the aforementioned six guys for the foreseeable future. Or until somebody gets injured or plays terribly.
When I spoke with Troy, he was confident that the goaltenders will all be good, but not entirely certain when the organization will settle on a pairing.

Good show, PMM you are one of the few who brings hard info to the CP site and I'm glad to hear you got a nice opportunity. Free press pass too, that's great.

IMO Pierre Monster McGuire is the best hockey news sources on CP - and he doesn't even cover the Calgary Flames!

Fine article Freeway, this quote made my mind wander.
Quote:
Not just a team, we want to make it into a program where it’s holistic and people develop both as people and as hockey players and as teammates and they develop as family people.
|
It's obvious Ward brings more to his job than just coaching on the ice but it's a first for me to hear a coach refer to it as a holistic approach. Good for him and he seems to be making it work as the players buy into it. I just don't want to see a pyramids put under the bench like the Leafs did in the 70s although whatever works is fine with me.
Quote:
During the 1976 Quarterfinals against the Flyers, Red Kelly utilized his ‘Pyramid Power’ theory as a psychological ploy. Kelly had his players believe that pyramids were a source of energy and strength. The Leaf coach then placed small pyramids under the bench and in the dressing room. All this was to no avail as the hated Flyers won the bitter quarterfinal series in 7 games.
|
Interesting history whether you like the Leafs or not.

A lot of it, too, is that the Flames are most interested in adding guys that can mesh well with their group. They won't gamble on a talented player that could disrupt things, which is a bit of a departure from years past. Character is reportedly very, very high on their list of things they value in players. You can teach almost everything else, arguably, but you can't change character too much.

That's an understatement. Ruegsegger is a damn bowling ball out there. He's as wide as he is tall and when he goes into the corner, there's a good chance he'll come out with the puck. He'll be a great fourth liner in the meantime.

Congrats PMM. I hope you seize this opportunity and take full advantage.
You've essentially been CP's correspondent for the Heat anyway, so it should be easy stuff for you. Good luck! Having a press pass should be an awesome experience.
Also want to say nice interview by Freeway. It was a great read, thanks!

So what does Irving not even dressing for the first 2 games say? Is he 3rd on the depth chart and falling out of the Flames plans or are they gonna play Taylor and Brust off against each other knowing that somebody will likely have to be sent away from Abby?

I think Irving has a game limit that he can play due to his contract so they likely don't want to waste the games that he plays sitting him on the bench.
I doubt that he is anything other than in the running for the back-up job and unless the Flames are crazy he is easily ahead of both Taylor and Brust on the depth chart.
