^^ To be honest, I'm not even sure what he's saying in that quote. He's speaking in generalities and I have no idea what he's suggesting there.

His brother is hoping/expecting to play with Boston College in "the next couple of seasons". It appears Gaudreau isn't sure if he will still be with BC by the time his brother gets there and might jump to the NHL before that. That's what I took from it. If he wants to play on the same team as his brother (In College) he might have to wait a season or two.
I think the Erixon situation and that blueliner that bolted from the Ducks this off-season has spooked people.

Definitely.
Wheeler and Schultz (any others?) have spooked people about college players, and Erixon has spooked Flames fans in general about losing prospects.

Yup, Both Johnny Gaudreau & Mark Jankowski said the same thing in interview videos, that they would be willing to leave school if the opportunity arose to join the Calgary Flames.

With the free agents we've signed, I don't see any room for our young home grown players to move up, so things may have not changed. Even Baertchi hasn't had a spot opened up for him and Irving's status is in limbo. I guess we'll see in training camp but this summer it doesn't look the Flames have changed their spots. Lack of opportunity will just further establish our reputation around the league that we don't give young players a chance. With that rep, young players will be looking to go somewhere else and it gives me a reason to be spooked.

I'm not so worried about reputation, but they do need to be developing their young players. I'd much prefer they specifically leave a spot open every year for young players to compete for - they have enough prospects who have a shot. If no one steps up then you can always sign Mark Smith just before the season starts.

Flames management says that Baertschi pretty much has a spot assured.

i don't know about this anymore.
Last year we had tons of guys get a shot.
Horak made the team out of camp. Brodie was given his chance, and stayed with the big club. Byron, nemisz, baertchi were all given their chance when the opportunity came about due to injuries. Babchuk was being paid a hefty amount despite guys like smith and brodie playing.
That being said, the stempniak signing has me confused as to what the team's intentions are. Seems like we're top 3 line winger heavy:
iginla
cammalleri
tanguay
hudler
glencross
baertchi
Is stempniak insurance if they feel baertchi needs time in the minors? He's definitely not a 4th line guy, as comeau fits just fine on the 3/4 lines with his speed and hitting.
I really would have just preferred they let stempniak walk, and give guys like nemisz, byron the carrot that there's a spot open and to bring it come camp.

while i do understand what your saying, i think it's a bit of an overstatement. More telling may be the average age compared to other teams.

I think both Feaster and Wisebroad have made it quite clear that they want competition at camp. No saved spots for rookies or vets. There's enough people on contract to fill the roster, but players can be waived/traded. Feaster has been adament in saying that there are ways to get rid of contracts if need be. I think its a good idea to try and get the best out of every player. If we see a young player outshine a vet in camp and subsequently see the young player relegated to junior/AHL/NCAA/whatever, then I'll be concerned.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
FYI: @johngaudreau03 is playing on a line with Alex Galchenyuk & Colin Blackwell. @PatSieloff is paired up with Connor Carrick. #NJEC
|
Well that's pretty neat. One of our best prospects playing on a line with the 3rd overall pick.

Today's score card from Team USA Blue vs Finland (USA won 5-4).
http://www.usahockey.com/Tournament/...8&GameID=43137
Gaudreau had the first assist on a goal by Alex Galchenyuk. Patrick Sieloff took a two minute minor for high-sticking. Goalie John Gillies let three goals in on nine shots in 28 minutes of play.

Three Calgary Flames prospects were named to the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp final roster on Monday, getting them one step closer to landing a spot on Team USA's U20 World Junior Championship squad.
Winger Johnny Gaudreau, defenceman Patrick Sieloff and netminder Jon Gillies all survived the final cuts on Tuesday morning. Sieloff and Gillies were drafted by the Flames this year, in the second and third round respectively, while Gaudreau was selected by Calgary in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft.
All three suited up for USA Blue's exhibition tilt against Finland yesterday. USA Blue pulled off a 5-4 victory with Gaudreau and Sieloff both picking up points.
Sieloff assisted on Mario Lucia's first period goal after he wired a hard shot on net, setting up the rebound opportunity. Gaudreau earned the primary assist on Alex Galchenyuk's third period marker after a great tic-tac-toe passing play.
Gillies played the second half of the game, spelling off John Gibson. He allowed three goals and faced nine shots.
The USA will square off against Finland on Wednesday at 2:00 PM MT.

BTW anyone know why Markus Granlund is not on Finland's roster for these exhibition games?
Is he injured?

Scoring Winger

Not a whole lot of info coming out of this camp but one blogger has a daily summary.
John Gaudreau — Playing with Alex Galchenyuk for the third straight game, Gaudreau showed flashes of skill and made some good plays. He got on the scoresheet with an assist. Despite the lack of consistent effectiveness in camp, I think Gaudreau remains in camp and is still a favorite for a top-six role on the final team.
