Calgary acted as though luck wasn't a variable at all and beefed up their forward group, added depth and changed their coaching staff.

I think it's extremely wise and prudent to not include luck in your analysis of a team. If you're wrong about luck being a factor and you stand pat, you're going to have another awful year. If you're right and luck was a factor, and then you also improve the team substantially, you should be unstoppable.
Luck cannot be a considering factor for any GM.

Overall luck at the team level shouldn't be a factor in decision making but I think the key decision for the GM is in evaluating if each individual player fits in the role they are put in.
Is my number 1 center a number 1 center on a playoff team? When answering that question deciding if an underperformance the previous year was unlucky, injury related, stalled development, an over performance or indicative of that players real performance is key and has to consider luck.
If you go through your roster and every player underperformed what you believe is their baseline then you are likely wrong because its unlikely that every player underperformed.

LOL.... well I guess the folks north of Calgary are satisfied that they are a Reider, Brodziak and maybe a PTO like Garrison or Upshall, away from being a team even better than the one that won a playoff round 2 seasons ago

So here's todays deep "It could happen moment"
Nurse doesn't show up at training camp. The negotiations go on long and hard with Nurse's camp drawing the line that he wants either a 4.5 million dollar bridge or a big dollar long term deal.
The November deadline approaches.
Edmonton mired in some tremendous losing hockey panics, and signs Slava Voynov to a 3 year 3.5 million dollar deal, and tell Nurse to sit out if he's going to sit out.
It could happen happen happen happ . . .

If anyone is going to sign Slava Voynov its going to be the Oilers.
Whats that old saying? "Desperation is the mother of invention."
They will find a way. He would be their #1 Dman instantly.

Staples and Stauffer up to the usual no good-ness.
Oilers insider: Don't rule out Taylor Hall returning to Edmonton
https://canoe.com/sports/hockey/nhl/...a-104a630714ff
"Stauffer noted the following: “If I’m Taylor Hall, if I do go to free agency, I’m looking to go to a place that has a couple great centres. It’s clear from those comments that Taylor learned a tough lesson. We’ve had players who didn’t want to play here. Taylor wanted to play here. Taylor wanted to be part of the equation"

Alright, that's by far the funniest thing I've read today.

Hall would sign for the 'Tartarus Hellfire' before going back to that hellhole.

Idiots, if Hall has another season like last year he's a $11 million dollar a year player.
How would that work. Lets see shall we? hmmmmm
McDavid $12,000,000
Hall $11,000,000
Draisaitl $8,500,000
Lucic $6,000,000
Nuge $6,000,000
Sekeras $5,000,000
Klefbom $4,167,000
Larsson $4,167,000
Russell $4,000,000
Nurse $6,000,000 (I'm guessing here)
So total $67,333,000
5 forwards
5 defensemen
no goalies
Lets say that the Cap goes by 8 million to 88 million bucks.
They need a minimum of 7 forwards a defensemen and two goalies
And they need to do that with 21 million bucks. I guess it can be done, if your willing to have a pretty thin older garbage team, with a good first line and your blueline would still be pathetic.
I've said it before, Chia and the Oilers are out of the big game hunting free agency market for a few years.
Oh and I doubt that Hall will want to go back to that Hell hole, now that he's finally figured out what a banana is he's able to take a next big step into a larger more exciting world that doesn't have an arean that smells like steaming hot hobo pee boiling on a sewer grate and who's idea of culture is clog dancing in sandals and sweat pants.

Also Hall would follow James Neals lead with a snort and a "Why in the blue f would I want to go to Edmonton"

Hasn't he trash talked the oilers on a few occasions since leaving? Basically implying it was a #### show. What planet do these oiler writers live on to believe there's a desire to go back, also when they certainly won't be able to offer him the top contract.
