I'm sure you could get more than enough donations on here for the gas.

Sure, but that's not what you see when you click Edmonton on the website. I'm not clicking on Leduc to see Edmonton's current conditions. That would be like clicking on Airdrie to see Calgary's weather. That would be...no good.

Darnell Nurse turns 30 in February. 30. And he makes $9.25 million for the next six seasons. 30.

Come on, watching 'Disappointed McDavid' is practically a meme at this point.
It is hilarious.
Watching highlights and seeing him go from happy to distraught? It warms the soul.

No fights in this clip and honestly not a lot of whining. But a whole lot of “we”.

Its funny looking at the Oilers situation, Ken Holland and their executive literally built in a self destruct button for the year after next, with the hope that McDavid would be willing to finish his career in a rebuild.
Next year is the sound of the pin being pulled from the old grenade.
Leon is going to be a UFA, and its likely that he's going to get a massive raise probably to the league max, maybe a little less but lets say about 14 million bucks, more if the cap increases.
At the same time Bouchard is going to come due and sure he's a RFA, but if they want to keep him long term he's going to want top defensemen dollars to a reasonable number, and his agent is going to position him as a top pairing defenseman. Charlie McAvoy makes 9.5, same as Seth Jones, I mean even his own team mate makes 9 plus. So that's going to be a major hit.
So lets say that Bouchard gets 8 to be generous and Leon gets 14 so that's 22 million. But that's at the end of next season where the Oilers will go into the summer with 9 players under contract and have 38 million in cap space. So you sign those 2 and have 11 under contract with about 16 million left. Not bad right? Right.
But at the end of this year, they have 7 UFA forwards, no big deal as they're all junk. On the blueline they have Boingberg as a RFA, he's junk too, but he's going to want a raise.Up front they have Holloway as a RFA he's going to want a raise.
So lets say between those two sweat hogs they have to add 2.5 each or 5 million dollars to next years payroll. That takes them for next year to 16 players with 7 million bucks.
Ok, anyways, going forward, lets say that they do sign up Holloway and Boingberg for 5 million combined, they walk into the Draisaitl and Bouchard signing panic and we add actually 27 million for Draisaitl, Boingberg, Holloway and Bouchard.
So now they're at 13 players and have about 12 million to get to about 21.
But then, the spoon hits the striker and the grenade blows up, because the next year, they have to resign McDavid, and Kane comes up as well, though he'll be 34.
Now here's the hilarity. Normally a team in this situation would start graduating cheap talent from the farm team, you know, to reload. "Super easy, Simply not a problem". Yeah problem, they don't have much help coming up from the farm.
So what should the Oilers do? Well I don't think they're a true contender, I think they're second tier at best and a team that needs a lot of help to win a cup. So do they blow their franchises brain out next year before apocalypse rises? they might have to.
Because even if they sign Draisaitl who will be heading into his 30's Hyman will be hitting his down slope years and so will RNH who we could argue is not a great player. They'll still be stuck with Skinner for a couple of more years before he hits UFA time.
The Oilers have a huge decision to make next year, if they don't think that they are a true competitor, then they need to dump Draisaitl, and Nurse and RNH and show McDavid that they're going to gather assets and rebuild around him . . . again. and have that serious conversation with him at the end of next year about if he wants to stay with a rebuilding club or if he wants to be traded.
My gut tells me that this summer is going to be one of massive turmoil for the Oilers not of celebration.
