9 weeks until the season starts. Probably not enough time to ensure Eichel is 100% by the start of the season, if it was ever even a thought to begin with.

I think this is where Adams is trying to get the other teams to blink. The longer this drags on the more games Eichel will miss.

Adams and the Buffalo management are the most inept in the league ( and it s a league with Edmonton in it), we can't expect them to be rational actors here. Pretty soon they will be holding a hand with no money in the pot.

If I were BT I would be exploring option B right now ( assuming there is one).

I honestly don't know why he just wouldn't wait for the right offer. Eichel is under contract, let him sit if he wants to. It would be franchise crippling to let him go for something similar like the ROR deal where the return was embarrassingly bad.

Option B and C are Wright/Bedard, but that won't happen. This core is going places! Not deep in the playoffs, but places.

You would think that the longer this takes, his trade value is dropping as well.
With his recovery going well into the season, GM’s aren’t going to be willing to offer as much anymore

Just try to out-suck both Phoenix and Buffalo the next two seasons before you start talking about Wright or Bedard.

The lottery always makes things unpredictable, but the smart money has a pretty good idea where those two players are going.

Phoenix or Buffalo, eh? How about San Jose?

I wonder which one Kane is betting on

If they get rid of Kane, San Jose could have a dead-cat bounce just from the mental relief. AFAICT, unlike the other two teams I mentioned, they are not deliberately trying to lose.

This is a thought I had too.

They have some (formerly) elite players, they're just older.

You think they’re old now?

That 27 million on Karlsson / Burns / Vlasic still has all 3 signed the next 4 years, at which point only Burns drops off at age 40

And the more games he misses, the lower his value. And every team knows this. So Adams is essentially playing chicken against himself.

Does it lower his value though? There is still only one Jack Eichel and centers like this rarely come up. I think you just look to Duchene and see the value of holding out for the right deal. Especially if it is a futures deal, a team may be willing and okay to LTIR the Eichel salary. Do the Kucherov special. Depending on the Olympics, being out for 2-3 months once the season has already started could see him come back for the playoffs.

Adams knows that Treliving (for example) is fired if he does not have a successful season (whatever "successful" means for the owners), so he must be banking on Treliving blinking and adding that extra asset as camp draws near.... Same calculus maybe applies to the Rangers where the owner is stupid/crazy and wants success now. It is not unreasonable on the part of Adams to expect someone to "give"... The only real risk to Buffalo (since they don't need Eichel to finish last) is that Eichel pulls something really wacky.

I think some teams that have dropped out may circle back if he still hasn’t been traded a couple months into the season. By that point, this kucherov scenario is viable so he could be traded for using only futures… teams would not have to send back any cap. Also, a team secure in a playoff spot would no longer put any protections on their first round pick.

For example, if the flames were in a playoff spot and traded for eichel around December, they could keep all of their top players for the season + playoffs and add eichel just for playoffs. The package would have to be all picks and prospects - possibly having to include Dube or Valimaki as well.

Gaudreau-eichel-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Monahan-mangiapane
Lucic-backlund-Dube

That’s a solid top nine for a playoff run. Obviously some hard choices would have to be made in the offseason but it would be an all-in kind of move if the timing would work for Eichel’s return. He could even come back before playoffs if anyone was put on LTIR to make room for him.

Eichel is not a deadline acquisition type player so I don't see number of games missed being much of a factor.

Yeah the injury situation is huge but to suggest his value drops every day this drags on isn't correct IMO. This is a long term investment by somebody.

It's also a huge risk! There's no guarantee he recovers fully, or even plays again!

Without protection on the deal (protected picks, contingent picks based on recovery/games played), I wouldn't be comfortable with a deal.

If this drags on, the best course of action for Buffalo IMO would be to get Eichel's treatment started, and trade when healthy. They are expecting the acquiring team to assume the risk, and pay the premium for the potential.

If they are trying to pass the risk, the expected ask needs to reflect it!

The cost and number of suitors will increase (or be none if he can't recover), but that's the reward/risk, and if Buffalo isn't comfortable with the risk, they need to accept a lower cost to expect another team to assume that risk.

Sigh...

Jack Eichel
24 years old
Right shot center
Drafted 2nd overall
355 points in 375 career games

Just sitting there...
On the trade market...
For anyone to grab, who has the balls to take the risk....

31 NHL GMs agree that the asking price is not worth paying, since no deal has been made.

Are you saying that nobody in the entire league has any balls? Or is this a criticism of Treliving alone, as so often happens around here, ignoring the existence of all the other teams?
