Steady state of Calgary's roads in the winter are typically cold, dry or perhaps wet pavement. For the instances like today, sure, you're going to have an edge with winter tires over an all-weather for sure.
Once you start throwing in requirements like "I drive out to the mountains" or "I live in a rural area" in the mix, the winter tire starts to look much better for that specific person's use-case. But I think for most of the general public, something like a CrossClimate 3 / 3 Sport is a perfectly reasonable year-round choice.
Most people on the roads are boring motorists who commute and go to the grocery store. They aren't all driving sports cars or making regular trips into avalanche country, so the tires at the extreme end of the performance spectrum aren't really necessary for them, and that's where an all-weather I think makes a ton of sense.

I actually ended up wearing out my CCs. Got about 85K on them, winter effectiveness last year was not good. I got dedicated winters this time around.

Drive in was great, and fun. VW Sportwagen with winters always makes it fun.

This says they received 1000 tires which is a quarter of what they need. So I guess they're installing these ones ASAP and then getting another 3000 for the other busses over the next 4 years?

They aren't switching out all the tires immediately.
Essentially, they just changed tire models - so that when a bus is scheduled to get new tires, it will get the new model - which is an all weather tire.

Quite a few vehicles sliding backwards down hills though. I hear Calgary Transit replaced tires recently, so hopefully there's less of them clogging up hills.

Yes and no. I got a heated vest. It was nice, even if not fashionable. But within 18 months, the battery pack bulged and I stopped using the heated function. I didn't want a battery pack to explode on my body.
I have not yet had a chance to look for a quality battery pack that takes a barrel plug for the vest.

85k on a single set of tires is wild to me, I can't blame them for not doing quite as good on their final year in the winter.

They're warrantied for 100K km. Hoping they'll last the summer before the wear bars starting buzzing.

I wasn't looking forward to rush hour drive home tonight but it was an easy commute. No accidents, few strugglers. Well done everyone.

Sidewalks are super slick, used the last of my pickle from last year. Need to go get a new bucket full tomorrow.

I have....whatever VW Tiguans come with and I had no problems at all today. I abandoned Winter Tires on this one. Mostly due to laziness. I do miss them though, having Blizzaks on my old Jeep was awesome!
That being said...Holy ####!! I had to be at the South Health Campus today and that place is a Calgary Transit Graveyard!! No fewer than 4 buses were stuck, it was insane!
One went into the ditch on the Seton overpass which turned Deerfoot into complete gridlock. Ambulances couldn't even access the Hospital due to a couple of stuck busses all around the Hospital.
And its like Calgary Transit just never ####ing learns! You cannot run those goddamned accordion busses up and down the hill on Ogden Road at Glenmore...they toboggan down it and jackknife at the bottom and they get stuck halfway trying to go up it. It happens every year...you can set your watch to it!

I am not so sure about CT replacing the tires. I thought that was a plan in the next couple of years. I hope they didn’t anyway, cause that wouldn’t bode well since there were still mass casualties of buses all over the place that couldn’t get up a few small hills this morning an jack-knifed accordion buses on Deerfoot.

The buses not being equipped for the weather is one thing, but the videos of 8 buses being stuck on the same hill are inexcusable. Why do the drivers think it will be any different for them when they all have the same tires.

Has anyone studded their truck tires? Curious what the options are. I drive a lifted GMC 2500 with 35" Duratracs. I pull trailers all the time (Skid steer, sleds, RV, etc) back and forth from Fernie to Calgary pretty much weekly. Just looking for a little more traction on ice.
Might look at studded hakkapeliitta or similar for winter.

My colleague has a AT4 half ton with studded hakkapelliitas and it sounds pretty solid.

I run studded. My honest review is that you mostly don’t need them outside some edge cases, but in those edge cases you will be so glad you have them.
The only real drawback is you sound like you’re driving on a gravel road on dry pavement.
IMO the small increase in performance on ice is worth the small increase in price.

Absolutely sounds like studs would be worth it in your case. Though with the extra weight, they may wear down quickly?

Just from my memory/experience, 428 in a 24 hour period. That 367 in a 12 hour period is likely going to be the new one, though.
