So are there any rumours of Flames trades today?
Not wading through a hundred pages of people taking about Kadri and a retention slot to find out

I don't understand comments like this. Dreger has said many times that a Kadri trade would be done already if the Flames were willing to retain. Because they have had good offers.
Do you really think he is referring to a 5th round draft pick?

Not yet. Very quiet. Sounds like flames are really going to push on Kadri today though

TBF Dreger once referred to Carter George and a 1st as a haul from LA. He might be referring to that

Recent retention history suggests it's not a Flames reluctance to use a slot.
It's number of slots left.
(Kadri for 3 years is a different animal though both in total dollars and the uncertainty you build by having a slot tied up that long)
|
Exactly - one slot left, so they need to get value for it.
If you simply dump Kadri, as many fans on here suggest, and accept a ####ty return, you burn yourself twice, because you now don't have a retention slot for Coleman and thus reduce his return as well.
Negotiations require patience. And resolve.

Yes because similar high dollar retention. In the past has been valued at a 1st round pick.

And contending teams are probably thinking they can just buy him out on the cheap after this season and it works out well for them. It would also work out well for Kadri. He would get 14.32 million on buyout and would just have to sign a 2.4 million dollar a year contract and make more money.
He is probably worth at least 15 million a year over 3 years contract this offseason.
So a team could get him for this year and not really worry about the cap consequences in subsequent years, Kadri makes more money and the Flames have a retention slot tied up for 6 more years. Works for everyone.

Trades 3-5 years ago when the cap was flat and lower have no effect on today’s retention values

I believe in the Jays.

Can we just pinky swear to take Kadri back for the last year or two of his contract?

You ignore the real $ cost to a team to buy Kadri out
You think someone is trading for Kadri for 1 playoff run and spending that much real $ to buy him out
Zero chance a team buys Kadri out this offseason

Ember Kadri with Sutter? Ya started to see that Kadri last night. A lot of banging his stick after missing a pass, looking up to the roof when he wasn’t givin the puck slow skating and just moving around the ice. Well if we don’t get him traded today that’s what we will be stuck with for three years.
And damn 33 pages of retention talk..my poor brain and eyes..lol

I had TSN muted for being so boring but they did a cinematic comedy bit that looked pretty funny based on the little I caught. The insiders were dressed in ski masks I believe breaking into Bob McKenzie’s house, McKenzie was lounging watching TV while swirling a red wine, and Dreger said I can’t replace Bob, GMs don’t answer my calls. Lol
I love that Sportsnet added Versteeg along with having Biz and Bieksa.

I hope we trade Coleman, one of Hanley/Pachal, one of Lomberg/Beecher today.
Kadri offseason.
And next season - Frost, one of Maatta/Whitecloud next season.

Why would an owner worry about the 12 million to buy him out if Murray should not worry about the 7-10 million to retain on him? Of course that scenario is unlikely, for the very reason you cite. Same reason Murray should be worried about eating a boatload of money to “make the team better”. Both scenarios are probably what makes the team better and yet in both scenarios the owner would likely say no unless they can see real value for it.
A buyout after 26/27 would be very likely imo. That would only cost the contending team about 7 million bucks and would use a retention spot for the Flames for 5 total years instead of 3.

That's 7, just looking at the roster today. Do we think any of the above are apart of the team when it's ready to compete?
And the answer also would be "players that aren't even on the roster today, acquired via deals and signings".
|
The easiest way for a rebuilding team to add free assets is to sign middling UFAs, give them ice time, then trade them at the deadline with retention.
Retention has value - and is a limited resource. But fans just want trades at any price.

Because ME also gets out of $15 million of the salary he dumps
We can keep Kadri and ME can pay him 15$million in his 37 and 38 year old seasons

Ya, the value of the Flames theoretically signing John Carlson to a one year 9 million dollar contract and flipping him at 50% for a first round pick next year is far higher than any value in retaining on Kadri.
