And their retention slot is tied up for the whole duration of the buyout?

Seriously?
Do we know that?
If so you can't really trade a player with more than 1.25 years left on their contract with retention. Ever.

Of course it uses it. Who else is paying that buyout salary cost but the team who has contractually said they would (which is the team that has previously agreed through the retention to do it)

Yes we know that, it is in the CBA in black and white.
(Not you) but folks in general should probably use google before they go off about retention slots 😂

After July 1 I think teams will be even more hesitant to take on the back half of Kadri's contract knowing you have no idea if you get even 1 productive season out of him.

I'm not pretending to know what the value differential is.
But they only have one slot, and may have to use it on Coleman until they free up another.

It is correct
So the Avs could have traded for Kadri, bought him out after next season and they would be on the hook for 4 seasons at 1.87 million and the Flames would have a retention slot being used for 4 seasons and it would cost the Flames 460,000 dollars.
|
Wow Gavey ... that changes everything.
No way I trade him retained.
If they do I'll be praying he has a solid season next year, and then again the year after.

I'd hold onto Coleman before Kadri personally
3 vs 4 seasons isn't a big deal to me personally, you make it work and have a plan for 2 retention slots

Yup it really does change the entire landscape of a Kadri deal. I had no idea

That's very prohibitive. Brings a whole other level of caution to retaining multiple years on Kadri then. A retention slot for ~ 5 years isn't worth it.

This is why the flames want a solid piece back for the retention.

Will the Flames still be looking at trading away players and retaining in 4 years, or is that the time period for when the team might be looking to add?

With how buyout friendly the Kadri contract is a team could treat Kadri like a rental. The Avs could have got him for the Roy price (late 1st and a 5th) used him for this year and then bought him out this summer. In that case he would cost them (assuming say the Flames retained 20% for that):
Avs - 2.57 next year and then 1.76 for the next 5 years
The Flames would use a retention spot for the next 6 years after this one.
That would be a pretty good way for a contender to deal with Kadri.
