Last weekend the haze from all the fires made it look like Mars here. It was pretty eerie. First two images are sooc except for very light crop on first pic.
The sun at 10 am @ 140 mm
About half an hour later @ 300 mm

My bucket list trip... Thanks for the photos, great stuff.
If you don't mind me asking: Did you have any troubles with the equipment due to the cold temperatures? What did you shoot with (body, lenses)? How close did you get to the wildlife?

I should probably start a thread just for this for future reference.
The expeditions are during the Austral summer, we were there the last two weeks of January. Temps were right around the freezing mark. I think our coldest day was -5 to -8 and warmest +5. We had a couple of days of rain, wet snow, and crazy blizzard.
I travel light and everything I shot is from my Panasonic LUMIX FZ200 bridge camera. Having a single 25-600mm lens meant I wasn't carrying a lot of weight on the excursions. I lost a bit of quality on some shots but I always had what I needed at hand. There were a couple of Nikon reps on the boat and the Euro rep had a new carbon fibre long lens. The thing weight a lot less than the regular lens but was still a giant bazooka he carried around. His shots with it are ridiculously awesome. I tried to take a lot of the same shots he was taking and found capturing wildlife his camera was a clear winner. Landscapes were a lot closer. Of course, his lens was 16k and my whole camera setup with filters, batteries, etc was ~$500.
The wildlife doesn't fear you. We are supposed to stay 5 meters away from the Penguins but they don't know that. If you sat down on a rock by the water and waited they would pass right by you as they went in and out.

Yes. They were used for special effects in the analog era. Nowadays, most of their stuff can be recreated in various PP programs. You still can use them on digital bodies, but I wouldn't recommend wasting your time and money on them, unless you have a very special effect in mind that you want to achieve.
Here's one example set from Flickr:

The more you talk about it, the more I'm reminded of my trip to the Galapagos. Same type of situation where the animals are totally accessible and without any fear of humans. In many cases they just litter the landscape. It's like travelling back in time to prehistoric times.
Scenes like this are around every turn.

I've been meaning to put up more Galapagos photos...will have to get on that.

Do not toy. Just go. It's expensive (although maybe not Antarctica expensive), but worth every penny. The most stunningly unique place I've ever been to.

That sounds right. I turned west from Turner Valley towards K-country - just looking for old farms and what not. Saw a building on the north side of the highway about 25K along so pulled over to check it out. And then turned to look at the other side of the highway and saw it. I would have missed it otherwise - it is very hard to spot if you are heading West, a lot easier heading East.
Very odd thing though - there is just enough track for it to be sitting on there - no other signs of a railway. Why is it there? How did it get there?
I can't find anything online about it - except more photos like mine.
You are right though it is a lovely drive. Not much traffic and some amazing scenery.

Actually after googling "caboose near Eden Valley" thanks to your post I found information that it was used as a cabin at one point. Which makes sense - I have a buddy who uses a train car as a cabin near Dryden, Ontario. It would explain why it was there at one point. Though the inside didn't look like something used as a cabin.

ive been to both.
Antarctica is by far more expensive. But both are "must do". In the Galapagos, you do get what you pay for. If there is a boat considerably cheaper, skip it.
but i digress and don't want to take away from the thread.
