I think the only problem with the Weegar deal was that it came upon us all of a sudden, and our expectations were sky high.
Some thought that it might be Iggy coming back, and while it seemed unlikely, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility at that time. It seemed like some team had made Conroy an offer he simply could not refuse.
At the vert least, most thought it would be a first round pick and a very good prospect.
So, when the actual deal was tabled, without one elite piece, it was a complete letdown.
I think it would have been received differently if we all knew that Weegar was being shopped.

It seems most are moderately to very happy with the deal and not suffering from the let down you describe
Generally the trade has been received well

Whatever, if trades are on the table retention or not, and Kadri/Coleman don't want to waive, (assumption), than that's on them.
Both are pros and I would think they understand that.
Still think it's in the organization best interest to move on, but, whatever, the organization is still moving in the right direction.
I can't believe though that retention is really required on Coleman, that term and amount of money on the contract is good value, they should be able to easily trade that asset

Im as guilty as anybody but if this trade season has taught me anything is that our collective perception of players values is wildly out of wack. I think that fuels the disappointment in trades when they happen.

Starting to think Detroit is the spot for Kadri. They have the cap space, good assets, closer to home, position of need, going for the playoffs.

Really hard to make the money work though. Every cap dump player they have they could send back has some form of a trade clause. If you are a vet why are you waiving that to leave a playoff team for the Flames?

I think the problem is 2 things.
1 - every year there seems to be a handful of posters that think teams will just trade elite prospects for good players. It seems like some think we will get returns that instantly put this rebuild at the top of the league.
2 - the true value of draft picks. People continue to get disappointed in adding 2nds instead of late 1sts. Utah's 1st is in the range that could be very valuable, but this is probably why it wasn't in the deal. The value of 3 2nds is more than a 1st in the 15-22 range if you actually track the results. Considering that 1 of the 2nds is the NYR's, a pick likey before 35 with 2 other 2nds vs a pick that could be around 18-19 OV is a win IMO.
I would have taken their 1st with the hopes it slips to the 12-16 range but I'm sure there would be protection and from their spot similar to the Rangers last year it could have been top 12 protected. Teams seems to be adding 2nd conditions lately of what happens if the pick moves to 27 as well. 3 2nds for me is a win vs getting 1 picks around 18-20
I also think the 2nds could be used with Vegas 1st to move up so having 4 in total could allow Conroy to work his way up the draft.

Take back Laine and they gain an extra million in cap. And Laine is a pure cap dump unlike Nichushkin.
For that, give us the premium prospect. I don't care about pucks anymore. Flames are gonna have a glut over the next 3 drafts.

I'm also of the belief the Flames are going to add some salary tommorow. They're uncomfortably close to the cap floor and the UFA group is very weak.

“Awkward” isn’t even the right word for the situation if Kadri and Coleman aren’t traded at this point. I understand how negotiations work, but they have obviously had conversations with Management about being moved.

I am really thinking about everyone's initial reaction once we saw no first round picks were involved, nor any very good prospects. If you read the initial reactions, there was a let down, which has since dissipated for many.
I was in shock initially when I saw the return, as I was in shock when I first heard of the potential trade.
To me, the best part of the trade now is that it does signal a tear down of the Flames, which is much overdue.

I think we'll be a bit disappointed in the return for Kadri if there ends up being no retention in place.

Avs offer obviously wasn't good enough, otherwise salary retention would be a non issue.
