My favourite quote on the oilers was

"with McDavid on the ice the oilers are as dominant as the early 2000 red wings, but without him they are well, the Oilers."

Here's some visual proof plotting shots from last night for each forward line:

Which is all damning and hilarious, except the fact that they have him. Much like when opposing fans used to rip the mid-2000's Flames for Kiprusoff's god like play. At the end of the day, he was part of the team and a big reason why we were a perennial playoff team.

the chart for the Tenderline is just sad. it's like they were specifically looking for the least dangerous shots they could possibly manage.

That's why I said earlier they're actually a good team. I'm not discounting that.

It does maybe for interesting discussion on where they are for playoff matchups as there's a big target for a game plan

The big difference being that unlike Kiprusoff, McDavid cannot play 60 mins/game. The reason the criticism is valid is that like Kiprusoff, with such a heavy workload it is probable that McDavid will run out of gas before the Oilers play their first playoff game.

Oh yeah, I figure they'll definitely make the playoffs this year, despite this current dip, but I think the grinding playoff game combined with teams keying in on McDavid will make for a tough match up no matter who they get.

Probably a first round exit this season with some homework to do for next playoffs, but with that first playoff experience and some tweaking they'll probably be a really solid team next season. Especially if Jesse Puljujarvi starts contributing after a tough first season.

No, no. Lucic is big and mean and takes the puck to the net

McDavid really is an amazing player and it really is too bad for the NHL that this gift of talent is being wasted in Edmonton. I wonder if Bettman spins in his bed at night thinking about what could have been and just how badly the Oilers screwed the league with their total persistent ineptitude and failure. If it doesn't keep him up at night, it should.

Thank Christ. The chirping from Oiler fans on my FB page after a few good games was becoming unbearable.

Where's that graph taken from? I watched a little bit of the game and it doesn't seem accurate at all. Drake Cagiula had a shot from closer in and it's not on the graph at all.

I guess Count Drakula's shot didn't count.

From NHL's shot report of the game last night, Drake Caggiula had 2 SOG last night and they were both on the PowerPlay. The shot charts above are from 5v5 scenarios.

I'm so happy to see that Lucic is already showing how bad his contract really is and will be in the future.

During the allstar break the Sun had a column on the genius of Chia. I think he's pretty much been an Oilers GM, his big moves are brutally bad his small moves turn out to be ok.

McDavid, Talbot, Maroon and Draisaitl are effectively disguising that this is not a good team overall. And I give credit for getting Talbot and Maroon and Draisaitl is a rare draft pick that turns out well, and frankly I could GM the Oilers and draft McDavid.

With not much on the way that's exciting from their prospect pool and a lack of overall organizational depth, unless they can clone those four guys, the Oilers probably aren't going anywhere, and with their contract situation its going to be tough to improve their team through free agency unless they're willing to move Eberle and or RNH for nothing that involves contract dollars.

Ok, I know it's fashionable to pick on Lucic and this is low hanging fruit but he is so slow. He might be a 4th line grinder making $6,000,000/year as early as next season.

I know Oilers fans have visions of the 80's dynasty dancing in their heads but they're way off. Those teams could come at you in waves. I don't see the current version being a tough out in the playoffs. You make things miserable for McDavid and you win.

I had a friend suggest that Lucic going LTIR or retiring in the next couple years due to his back condition. Im no doctor so I don't know how that will affect him as he ages.

If he retires doesn't his cap still count under recapture?

I don't think so. I thought those were just the cap circumventing deals made prior to the cba?
